HUNDREDS of visitors turned out despite the bad weather to celebrate the 24th Whalley Pickwick Festival.

The annual event, which marked the 200 year anniversary of the birth of author Charles Dickens, saw several visitors handed prizes for the best Dickensian style fancy dress.

With live music from pipe and brass bands, children’s entertainers, street enetrtainment, late night shopping and 35 stalls selling a range of gifts, cards, Christmas fare, festive foods, hot foods and tombolas visitors had a great time.

Whalley Coun Joyce Holgate said it was clear to see why the popular event was putting Whalley on the map.

She said: “I think this years Pickwick Festival has been a resounding success depite the bad weather.

“The event is very important for Whalley as a town as it shows vistors what we have to offer.

“Pickwick is always a lovely event as people are really friendly and the costumes are great.”

Cystic Fibrosis sufferer Sophie Holgate, and her mother Andrea, also took the opportunity to thank all who have locally helped with donating and supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Trust at the event.

Trainer Rob Edmond from ITV1’s Biggest Loser Trainer, were also part of the official opening.
