Rossendale man dies following Wilpshire road crash
5:26pm Friday 16th November 2012 in News
A MAN from Rossendale has died following a car crash in Ribble Valley on Sunday.
Zolillur Rahman, 24, suffered significant head injuries and was pronounced dead in Royal Preston Hospital at 4am yesterday (Friday) morning.
Another man, 35-year-old Robert Carson from Blackburn, also died as a result of the two-car collision.
Mr Rahman’s Ford Focus and Mr Carson’s Vauxhall Corsa collided head-on at around 10.30pm on November 11 between the Bulls Head pub and the Wilpshire Hotel in Whalley New Road.
An investigation into the collision continues and police are still appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
Both men had to be cut free from their vehicles by firefighters after the crash, and were taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Mr Carson died of his injuries that night.
Mr Rahman was transferred to Preston where he was in a critical conditions. Medics battled throughout the week to save him but he was unable to recover from his serious head injuries.
The road was closed for four hours for accident investigators to carry out their work, and calls have been made in the wake of the tragedy for traffic calming measures to be put in place along the stretch of road to control speed.
Over the past four years there have been four crashes resulting in injuries on the same stretch, according to county hall chiefs.
Earlier this week, Mr Carson’s widow Samantha described the crash as ‘tragic’.
The scene of the crash has become decorated with floral tributes to Mr Carson, who had worked for WEC Machining in Darwen since May.
A card left by Samantha read: “To my beautiful, wonderful husband Rob. You weren’t just my husband, you were also my best friend. Love you forever your loving wife Sammie.”
Anyone with information on the crash should contact Lancashire police on 101.
