A MAN died after falling 80ft from the roof of a multi-storey town centre car park.

The 20-year-old, believed to be from Accrington, fell from the top floor of the Accrington Arndale car park into the service yard used for deliveries.

Police were called to the scene at 10.40am but said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman said: “Police attended reports that a man had fallen off the Arndale Centre in Accrington at around 11am this morning.

“On arrival, officers found a 20-year-old man on the ground with serious injuries.

“He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital but sadly died of his injuries.

“His family are being informed and, at this stage, it is not believed to be suspicious.”

A spokesman for Jesta Capital, which acts on behalf of the Arndale Centre owners, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and we send them our sympathies.”

Shoppers were shocked to hear about what had happened.

Linda Altham said: “It is very shocking and horrible to hear.

“There is nothing anyone can do to stop things like that happening.”

Stuart Jackson said: “It is sad to hear. It is such a shame.”

The death is the third in as many years and campaigners and councillors have called for new security measures to be put in place.

Barnfield councillor June Harrison said: “It has happened before so it does want looking at.

“It is devastating. I was walking through the other day thinking how beautiful the Arndale looked with all the Christmas lights but that puts a real dampner on things.”

After the last incident in 2010, Jamie Scahill, from East Lancs CALMzone, the Campaign Against Living Misery, called on Arndale bosses to demolish the building or install safety nets or fences.

A spokesman said: “We are desperately sad to hear the news.

“We work with councils to introduce measures such as putting up signage where things like this has happened.

“There are a variety of options, but there do need to be more places available for men suffering depression as three quarters of people with depression are male.”
