Pendle fund-raisers tackle three peaks challenge for muscular dystrophy charity

A TEENAGER with muscular dystrophy has inspired a Pendle volunteer worker to scale the nation’s three highest peaks.

Mudassar Ali, 34, from Nelson, was impressed with the work Chorley’s Derian House Hospice did with his friend Muhammad Murtaza, who has the condition.

So, in partnership with fellow climber Zafer Shakir, from Preston, they set out on a fundraising mission.

The pals decided to tackle the Three Peaks Challenge — conquering the highest summits in England, Wales and Scotland — meaning they had to scale Scafell Pike, Snowdon and Ben Nevis.

Mudassar, who has volunteered for Pendle Community Radio, said: “The conditions for Snowdon and Scafell Pike were ideal but near the tops it became very windy.

“Nevertheless, the climbs were a success.

“Ben Nevis provided a different challenge, with a mixture of weather conditions though.

“We had fog, rain and snow but still made it.”

He said he was motivated to help out the hospice after see-ing the ‘excellent care and support’ given to Muhammad, aged 15, who lives in Brierfield and attends Pendle Vale College.

Mudassar is on course to raise £1,000 for the hospice and has a ‘justgiving’ fund-raising page online.

Mr Shakir was raising funds for the British Heart Foundation as his father died from a heart attack when he was a young boy.

Snowdon is around 3,560 feet, Scafell Pike is slightly lower at 3,209 feet but Ben Nevis towers above them at 4,409 feet.
