Accrington high school reaches new heights

AN ACCRINGTON high school continues to go from strength to strength under new leadership.

Headteacher Xavier Bowers and deputy headteacher Ivan Catlow have both been in post at Mount Carmel High School in Accrington for just over a year and in that time the school has celebrated it’s best ever GCSE results and a positive Ofsted report.

The independent body inspected the school, judging the achievements of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management as ‘good’.

The report said the school helps the majority of students make good progress from their starting points, enjoy their learning and apply their skills well in varied contexts.

Officers say that teaching and learning are good across the school and students’ good behaviour contributes to their achievement. It also reports that attendance has improved significantly and exclusions are rare.

Even under the control of the last head, it was reported in this newspaper that 'This year we had our best-ever GCSE results, and were the fourth most-improved school in Lancashire.' This remark was not accompanied by data, perhaps deliberately so; for the first three schools may have enjoyed a great lead over this one, or perhaps all four and more may have recorded closely-similar but unremarkable performance. We were not able to judge the matter without a little work. What would be remarkable if it could be established is the claim that pupils achieved so much in the face of such alleged failing at the highest level of its management.
