£15,000 bill for smashed windows in Blackburn park
11:17am Tuesday 30th October 2012 in News
THE COST of vandals smashing 55 windows at the conservatory in Blackburn’s Corporation Park has totalled £15,000.
A gang of four youths, who were thought to have used bricks, sticks and metal bars to shatter the glass panes.
Thursday’s full Blackburn with Darwen Council forum will be told that the original £10,000 estimate to make the 112-year-old building safe and repair the damage has gone up by 50 per cent.
The attack last month followed the site’s ‘irreplaceable’ Flora statue being smashed in an early morning attack a week earlier.
The conservatory, which was built in 1900, houses exotic plants and a Heritage Lottery bid for £1.8million had been submitted to create an education centre and cafe, although this was recently turned down.
A report to councillors said: “The recent vandalism to Corporation Park conservatory may cost up to £15,000 for the making safe and repair of the damage.”

The reality is that until deterent sentences are handed out then this will continue. All that will happen in this case if they are caught is a slap on the wrist. Soft governments/judges have a lot to answer for. The birch should be brought back. It works in countries like Indonesia where people can walk around without any fear and this type of behavious is unheard of!

What if they next resort to arson? How will plastic windows help then? Better they are taught a lesson that discourages them from even thinking of doing it again!

The youth of today are wasting away and I feel that we may not be able to prepare the future for our children, in today's world, however we can at least try to prepare our children for the future by teaching them morals, manners and discipline.
