Rishton's young hero gets police award

A YOUNG hero has been presented with a top police award and recognised at a special civic event in his honour.

Rishton schoolboy Jacob Carr was presented with a bravery award by Lancashire Police’s Chief Inspector and a second award from Hyndburn’s mayor for stopping and helping a stranded neighbour who had broken her hip.

The St Charles’ Primary School pupil had been riding his bike down Westwood Avenue when he heard someone shouting for help from a nearby garden.

He looked down the driveway and saw his 82-year-old neighbour on the ground in the garden, calling out, having suffered a fall.

As Jacob was presented with awards by mayor John Broadley and Chief Inspector Joanne McHugh, his grateful neighbour Eileen Howarth looked on with Jacob’s family.

After telling his mum, who called an ambulance, Jacob helped the paramedics with the blankets and stretcher. Police officers and paramedics credited the youngster with saving her life.

The award was presented to Jacob at a special reception, in the mayor’s parlour, at Accrington Town Hall.

Mayor John Broadley said: “It was very touching, Jacob was quite subdued but his family were very proud and the lady he helped was very glad to be there. This is the first bravery award I have ever given in my role as mayor and i can’t think of anyone who deserves it more than Jacob.”
