Labour leader Ed Miliband visits Lancashire to launch police commissioner campaign

LABOUR leader Ed Miliband yesterday promised that key East Lancashire crime issues like grooming vulnerable girls for sex and anti-social behaviour would be tackled if his party’s candidate became county police commissioner.

He came to Preston to launch both the national campaign for the posts and Clive Grunshaw’s bid for the job locally.

Mr Miliband warned the elections risked being "invisible" but said were still vital in the fight against crime and disorder.

He told the Lancashire Telegraph that people’s concerns in East Lancashire would be a priority of Fleetwood’s county councillor Grunshaw if he got the high profile job.

Mr Miliband said: “If he wins Clive will be coming to places like Blackburn and Burnley to make sure their resident’s views are represented in decisions he takes.

“It’s vital that their priorities are police priorities.

“We must take the sexual grooming and abuse of vulnerable young people very seriously and the work of Blackburn’s Engage team in this field will be studied carefully to see what lessons can be learned both locally and nationally. We need their joined up approach.

“The government is replacing Blackburn MP Jack Straw’s anti-social behaviour orders but we know this is a key issue to people in East Lancashire and Clive will make sure it stays high on the county police agenda.”

The other candidates for Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner in the November 15 elections are Conservative Tim Ashton, Liberal Democrat Afzal Anwar, and UKIP's Robert Drobny.

Thanks Ed, the Labour Party have been fantastic for the people of Blackburn over the years.
The Labour Party has put Blackburn on the map - quite literally - people come from miles and miles to live here.
You only need to read this paper to realise what a happy, contented town this is.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the Labour Party can politicise the police further and what wonderful benefits (no, not those kind, silly) you can bring to the Lancashire folk of Blackburn.
I'm also looking forward to my council tax bill - what will the Independent Commissioner earn? I've heard it's only £100,000 a year plus an office to run. Smashing. Thanks for ensuring we vote the right man in.

I love how we have to vote for a certain MP or Party in order for Sexual Assualt and Grooming to be targeted against. It's basically like saying the assaults will continue with a Conservative or Liberal MP in power... where's the logic in that?

Won't be voting for Tim Ashton. He wants the world to travel at no more than 20mph. Never heard of any of the other candidates so won't be voting for them either. Probably won't be voting at all. What a waste of taxpayers money this idea is. But that's politicians for you. Our money is there for them to spend.

Thanks, I am aware of this. I'm also aware of the fact that in their desperation to get their hands on the purse strings again they will resort to all manner of dirty tricks. The outcome, as usual, is that we - the taxpayer - will have to foot the bill.
I presume you are a deficit denier like shadow chancellor Balls (or is he now denying he denied it - I can't keep up with the duplicity!)

Nothing new or of sense in crime commisioners really. We had drug czars, and we all know how effective they were ;-) Good PR stunt though, and a nice earner for someone with plenty crayons to play with. He must be out of his Ed.
