Ribble Valley MP seeks residents’ views on badger cull

NIGEL Evans is urging East Lancashire residents with views on culling badgers to write to him so he can feed their opinions into the government’s consultations on the issue.

The Ribble Valley Tory welcomed the Government’s decision to delay the two pilot projects the West Country until next summer.

Now he wants to make sure Ministers get the final decision right before marksmen start shooting badgers to try and tackle tuberculosis in cows.

Mr Evans said:“I have received a large amount of correspondence in the past few weeks from constituents who are concerned about the proposed badger cull and it is important that the Government comes to the best decision.

“If anybody would like me to pass on their views to the minister, I would be happy to do so and grateful if they could write to me at the House of Commons. I will ensure that their opinion is heard.”

jimpy0. The farming industry receives upwards of £3bn annually in grants and subsidies. Where does this money come from?. Well it comes from the taxpayers. And who are the taxpayers?. The local residents are the taxpayers. So at the end of the day the piper calls the tune. You think that badgers serve no purpose. The vast majority of UK citizens love their wildlife and are totally against a badger cull. Now to the scientific facts: Lord Krebs recently led a pilot badger cull during which 8000 badgers were culled, .to investigate the effect this had on the incidence of local Bovine TB. He is arguably the top scientist in this field of research..His findings were that culling badgers was not the answer to TB in cattle. I am not saying that badgers are not carriers of Bovine TB, they are, as also are foxes and rats. Increased biosecurity on farms to stop badgers entering cowfields and buildings is a must,, and there are grants to cover these expenses. Bovine TB is mainly transmitted cow to cow and farmers must clean up their acts. Recent EU reports have been critical of husbandry, transporting of cattle and poor record keeping of infected stock in the UK, Finally there is light on the horizon. A BTB vaccine for cattle is in the final stages of development and should be ready in a year or so. A badger vaccine is already in use and badgers are being vaccinated right now. The Government's proposed badger cull has been a shambles from the start. They have flown in the face of the scientific evidence available that a cull would not work. They said they were going to cull 70% of badgers in the pilot area, and didn't even know how many badgers there were to start with. Initial costs have soared and are currently around £1.5m, the bulk of this being paid by the taxpayer. They rustled up an army of shooters, with just one days training, to go and supposedly do a clean kill on a badger in the dark This would have led to hundreds of wounded badgers dying a slow and painful death. BIOSECURITY AND VACCINATION IS THE WAY FORWARD NOT THE MASS MURDER OF OUR WILDLIFE.
