SIXTH formers in Blackburn rowed 100km for charity with the help of record-breaking Atlantic rower Helen Leigh.

Pupils from Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School used the school's two rowing machines and raised £120 through donations for ECPAT UK, a charity that aims to end the exploitation of children.

It is the same charity which Helen supported when she crossed the Atlantic.

Paul Oliver, the school's director of development and admissions, said the pupils were inspired by Helen's presentation about her row.

He said: “They said we should do something, as they realised it was also National Slavery Day. They thought it would be nice to do something on that day.”

Last year the school raised £19,500 for various charities.
