A PUBLIC inquiry into plans for a controversial retail development will resume later this month.

Peel Holdings have applied to expand the Whitebirk Retail Park on the Hyndburn-Blackburn border.

Hyndburn Council rejected the developer's plans to lift restrictions on the sale of white goods in four of the stores.

Retailers also cannot sell soft goods such as food and clothing - but Peel appealed against the decision and forced the inquiry to take place.

It ran over its scheduled week and will resume on May 19 at Scaitcliffe House, Accrington, with a decision expected in the summer.

Hyndburn council is just like blackburn council a bunch of wingers. surely the opening of any stores is good for the public as it increases competion and delivers more choice. the hyndburn retail park currently is all but dead, theres hardly any decent stores, 3 units have been empty for years and its such generally deprived. when i compare our blackburn/hyndburn retail park to that of preston or bolton its such a dissapointment. where bolton have managed to cram in a gigantic tesco extra and a asda megastore into one retail park here hyndburn council opposes four relatively small goods stores - it really amazes me. now i know some of you might say we have a retail park next to blackburn town centre, but have you seen how fragmented that is? and how many busy roads cut up that retail park? thats a typical blackburn council **** up. we have so much land up at whitebirk, close to all the motorway junctions etc its a real oppurtunity to develop the site in a big way and fet some trade from passing motorway traffic. so hyndburn council please can you do away with all the red tape, and get your small poxy relatively unknown council on the map by doing something big at whitebirk.
Well said!

You only have to look at Middlebrook, Horwich to see how it is done!

If you're against retail parks, big retailers - then don't go to them!
