Christmas markets hope for Blackburn town centre

A GERMAN market could be coming to Blackburn next year thanks to links between The Friends of Blackburn Cathedral and their counterparts in Brunswick.

The group organised a visit to the German city so 28 of its members could explore the life of its cathedral during Advent and experience its acclaimed Christmas market.

They invited Blackburn and Darwen markets manager Keith Holden to join them to explore how better links could benefit both sides, share some trade secrets and explore possibilities for the borough.

It is now hoped a German Christmas market could be brought to Blackburn next December.

Brunswick’s 140-stall market is one of the most picturesque and popular in Germany.

It draws in hundreds of local and regional shoppers and tourists and surrounds the historic Dom or cathedral, which is packed with worshippers enjoying services and weekend concerts.

Councillor Dave Harling, the council’s executive member for regeneration, said: “Clearly the strong links between the cathedral and the Christmas market benefit both sides and we were keen to explore the possibilities for Blackburn with Darwen.

“This has already led to the children’s choir from Blackburn Cathedral performing at Blackburn market with more events planned for next year, and we are in talks with the Germans about staging an event in the borough next Christmas.

“Keith was able to pick up some trade secrets and tips from the German market organisers who were interested to hear about our regeneration programme, the importance of markets to our local economy and are keen to bring their traders to the borough.

“They also enjoyed the market specialities he took with him, including Lancashire cheese and black pudding.”

Es wäre wunderbar, wenn wir eine deutsche Markt in Burnley haben könnte ... Man kann einfach nicht zu schlagen ein wenig der deutschen Wurst.

Perhaps we could learn a few more good ideas from Germany such as decent strategic planning, decent public transport including trams, litter free urban areas, well planned cities with beautiful open spaces, sensible involvement of workers in running factories, good technical and vocational education provision to name but a few.

Brilliant. Will make me come into Blackburn more often. And whilst I'm there I may as well visit the Blackburn market and some other shops as well.

We were on the winning side only because the Americans joined in belatedly but we failed to capitalise in the peace that followed because we thought we were still a great power and the social structure and outdated industrial infrastructure and management attitudes which underpinned it failed to grasp opportunities. The same mistakes are still being made to this day and we will continue to be second rate until our thinking and political and social structure changes and we follow a more northern European model instead of one still too easily dominated by the USA which is also failing fast.
