A MAN who suffered frostbite after being kicked out of home following a row with his wife over a hot pie has been jailed for assault.

Keith Traill, 52, lived in a shed at Feniscliffe Allotments, Green Lane, Blackburn, in temperatures as low as -9C after being arrested for the offence on Boxing Day.

Hyndburn magistates heard how the offence involved him threatening his wife of four years with a fork, putting her in fear of an assault, because his pie was too hot.

His wife Pauline Thornley, told the court that their 14-year-relationship had been violent for 13 years.

She claimed matters became worse while her husband faced allegations of sexual abuse and said he threatened to kill her if she left.

She also claimed he told her he hoped she would die as she went into surgery and forced her to eat while she was recovering afterwards.

She is now filing for divorce. Traill, formerly of Ermine Close but now of Bolton Road, pleaded guilty to assault.

He denied any previous violence in the relationship.

He was sentenced to 56 days in custody for the offence with 10 days for bail offences to run concurrently, minus 13 days already served.

The court was told that Traill left the house early and came home with a bottle of 20/20 drink.

After becoming very drunk, he told her to make him a meat and potato pie but became angry that it was too hot.

Phillipa White, prosecuting, said: "She says she was beaten up at least once a month, with punches and kicks, particularly when he had been drinking.

"She says she never told her children. He regularly verbally abused her with cruel and sexually explicit comments.

"She says she struggled to eat while recovering from surgery, but her husband would threaten her and tell her to eat faster.

"Except for food shopping, she was not allowed outdoors."

Mrs White added that officers found her "distressed" on the day of the incident, found bits of food across the room and a fork in the middle of the floor.

They said Traill was drunk and refused to hand over a lighter, hidden in his hand.

Pam Baldwin, defending, said Traill, an alcoholic for 25 years, had burned his mouth and lost his temper: "He admits he held a fork close to her face and shouted.

"She has begun divorce proceeding and he has no wish to reconcile either."

Miss Baldwin said Traill had been in custody for two weeks, started detox and receiving medical treatment for on-going frostbite inj-uries in his feet.

She added he had nowhere else to go.

Chairman of the bench Kenneth Nolan said he gave him full credit for his guilty plea and said Traill "clearly had alcohol problems."

EEdiot Columbo! that's no light switch, it's reflection from the bloody hole in the back of his head, where his Mrs threw the spud pie and caused a brain explosion. Well I guess she should have.

so, if this was an asian famly we would have all the racist bigots all over this page whining about how bad muslims treat women. good to see the english population learning the medieval ways. hypocrites, the lot of ya!
Hey, you treat your Asian women as you please. They are all fat and ugly, have big noses and they paint their hands orange and smell awful!!!

This story is not about Pakistani men that believe that women should, cook, clean and walk behind them in the street.

It is about a man who got frostbite sleeping in his shed after his missus booted him out for being violent! He is now like Akon "all locked up"!!!

Now, do us a favour and go and stop your mates from selling heroin, claiming benefits, spreading TB and making suicide vest you cretin!!!

A lot of Blackburn "domestics" seem to arise from the preparation of food. Why is this?

Isn't this a contradiction - here you are turning something obviously nothing to do with race into a race issue. Get a life.

To 'Any Justice' ... I am well aware that its not just women that are mentally/physically abused by another person, granted the man abusing woman ratio is higher but thats because women do admit to it more - men often suffer in silence as they think themselves 'soft' or similar for not being able to help themselves and often men do not like asking for help...

this is a problem on all sides of the spectrum and yex there should be a lot more help widley advertised for men but for some unknown sake there isn't.. our hands are tied on that one.

My life has turned around I met a great man 10 years ago and he has looked after me and my two children ever since - we also have our own child now - thats the message that need to be got across to these battered men and women we are not alone, we are worth more than what these scum nflict on us and eventually you will find someone (if thats what you want) that will love and respect you...

respect yourself, realise you are worth something, believe in yourself and you can move mountains...

Naff off Mike with your pathetic comments. Its not that easy to get out of a violent relationship. Its not just the physical abuse the b*stards inflict on you its the mental abuse.. the fear of the low life coming after you and killing you... you have no idea what it is like to be in a battered persons shoes.. misguided love, the perpertrator always turning things round to make it your fault - 'if you not walk past tv at that moment I would not have missed that scene' was one excuse for a broken nose, falling asleep on sofa another reason.. they turn it round and blame you and when you hear it enough times you believe it... it takes a lot of strength to get out of these types of relationships - and I dont mean physical strength - but eventually/hopefully that day comes but I can assure you it is not easy... but once you take that step life becomes so different. Dont judge this lady because she 'let it go on' as you say, for as long as it did - you have no idea what she has gone through - hopefully none of your lady friends/ sisters/ daugters etc will ever be the victim of one of these scum bags cos God help them if they do as obviously they cant turn to you... dont judge unless you have walked in their shoes........

Note you are only trying to say Women are the only victims of DV however you have Women's Aid to turn to . Men who are victims have no organisations for help etc I sympathise with you if you have been a victim. Maybe BigPete might know of any organisations that support male victims and Pete you are a classic example that it works both ways fella. Good Luck to you both GT and BigPete for the future.
