COUNCIL bosses have refused to "roll over" and subsidise a doomed bus service.

Lancashire United, the private company that runs Blackburn with Darwen's bus network, has decided not to continue with the evening service on the eight and nine routes between Blackburn and Shadsworth, blaming a lack of passengers.

The bus network has been in private hands since January 2007 when loss-making Blackburn Transport was sold, and Lancashire United is trying to make the service break even.

The council has the power to subsidise any routes it wants to protect, but has decided against the measure this time.

Speaking at a meeting of Blackburn with Darwen's executive board regeneration port-folio holder Coun Alan Cottam, said: "We can't roll over every time a bus company says it wants to withdraw a service. On that basis we would only have buses on the Darwen and Accrington routes where it's viable."

Never mind Paul Councillor Cottom and his lot have given you free bowls, badminton and football. Its a pity there won't be any buses to get you there

The councilor does seem to miss the whole point of subsidies. They are there to prop up the services which are unviable. What he is basically admitting is that if they as a council dont get off their backsides and actually do something to help these services then they will fail. He is the councillor - its his job to sort it out. Thats why people voted for him

So if the council is so cash struck then why are the council tax payers who are in the majority paying towards the policeing of football matches and other such venues like night clubs when the businesses themselves should be paying the full costs and not the good cash struck council tax payers of Blackburn with Darwen who live within these boundaries
