A YOUTH club closed following a racist attack on a council worker has re-opened.

The Wednesday night club at Accrington Road Community Centre, Blackburn, regularly attracted 50 to 60 youngsters from the local area.

But Blackburn with Darwen Council decided to cancel the weekly meeting following a racially-aggravated assault at the club on October 24.

On that evening youth worker Javed Iqbal, 48, of Daisyfield, Blackburn, was struck on the head by a plant pot thrown by a member of a gang of white youths who had descended on the centre.

Two youths from the local area, aged 12 and 13, were arrested in relation to the incident.

The youngsters were given a final warning by police over their involvement in what officers described as a racially-motivated attack.

Coun Michael Law-Riding, executive member for leisure and culture at the council, said: "The community centre has re-opened but unfortunately, the worker who was injured has not yet returned to work."

It is understood that the youth club will be run on a week to week basis for the foreseeable future to see how things go.

Assault victim Mr Iqbal said he was disappointed that the youngsters had been warned rather than charged for their part in the incident.

Mr Iqbal, who is still on medication for high blood pressure following the attack, said: "I would have liked to have seen a stronger action but the police decided not to do that.

"I was disappointed they did not take more action because this was a serious incident.

"I don't think I'd be able to return to work at the centre but I haven't made a final decision on that.

"I keep waking up in the middle of the night thinking about what happened.

"The whole thing has made me fearful that someone could be following me or calling me when I'm out.

"It's really affected me."

Whilst accepting that being hit on the head with a plant pot is unaccepteable and painful, I can't help thinking that victim'e comments are phrased in exactly the right way to support a compensation claim!!

When you run a youth centre looking after kids and are then attacked by a racist mob i think his comments are completely understandable. He does a good job and i hope he returns to work.

I am the father of one of the youths in question and the youth worker is lying it was a cushion that hit the man not a plant pot, so his comments are for to support a compensation claim which is false and fraud this man should be arrested for fraud if he gets any sort of compensation.

Snakeaaa I do agree with you, it sounds like a compensation claim in the offing. However, how do you know it was a cushion, did you witness the incident? I've had the displeasure of witnessing many times the kind of behaviour the kids around Intack are capable of. They are nothing short of feral. Just like the catapult attack in lower darwen, I think its time this country took punishment of juveniles seriously. It appears they are above the law, the police are powerless and many parents incapable of instilling proper behaviour. Bring back the birch! I'll bet if we did a survey in the town centre today, most people would be in favour of attitude readjustment in this way.

i used to work in this area and yes i agree it was very right wing sometimes and on a number of occasions was attacked but i personally chose not to take them further, in order to help me build a relationship with the community. At times it was very hard as you thought to yourself i'm trying to help these people but yet they wanted to hearl racially attack and abuse you constantly. But then all you had to do was to look at their parents. Usually had no job, a drink problem that they wouldnt admit, string of partners and all they could do was blame the asians, whom i'm not saying are perfect. But are very hard working people and still have the family values that white working class have lost since the fifties. " what do we do"
