East Lancashire snow: ‘Madness of idiots on ice’

YOUNGSTERS in East Lancashire have been warned to keep off frozen waters after three separate ‘crazy, mindless’ incidents over the weekend.

Two youngsters were spotted playing football on the frozen Leeds and Liverpool Canal near the Moorings pub across from the old Infirmary site in Blackburn.

On the same canal in Clayton-le-Moors, teenagers were spotted writing words in the ice.

And a group of teenagers risked their lives by strolling across a frozen lake in Barrowford Park.

The reckless antics came on the day a man died in the River Tees, Stockton, trying to save his two dogs.

On Friday, two middle-aged brothers died after tumbling into icy water in Leicester’s Watermead Country Park.

Officials warned that East Lancashire could have a tragedy on its hands if the practice did not stop.

The big freeze has left many of East Lancashire's rivers, lakes and the canal frozen. Freezing temperatures, and snow showers overnight were expected to add to the situation.

While forecasters are predicting continuing icy temperatures and sleet and snow early this week.

But police warned that the low temperatures did not mean the waters were safe to walk on.

Inspector Gary Crowe said: “During the current icy conditions, adults as well as children are walking or playing on ice on lakes, ponds, canals and rivers.

“It is not safe and if anyone should fall through the ice hypothermia can set in very quickly, making it almost impossible to get out safely.”

Gill Owen, from British Waterways, which manages the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, said children were putting themselves and those who have to rescue them at risk.

She said: "We would urge parents to ensure their children keep away from frozen canals because they are simply not safe.”

Last month, United Utilities engineers spotted sledgers dangerously close to Fishmoor reservoir, Guide, Blackburn.

The firm has also warned youngsters to keep off its frozen reservoirs in East Lancashire.

Process manager Paul Hooson said: “Many of our reservoirs are in remote locations and roads are icy, making rescue by emergency services much more difficult.

“Parents need to warn their children to stay away.”

Barrowford councillor Jonathan Eyre said he was horrified by the youths who had walked across Barrowford Park lake yesterday.

He said: “I am absolutely shocked about this because we are currently seeing unprecedented ice.

“It is insane and mindless for any child to be on the ice and I would hope parents and schools can play a part in discouraging this sort of behaviour.”

Ward councillor for the Infirmary area, Maureen Bateson said: “I think it’s madness, particularly with the recent deaths.

“Frozen canals are not playgrounds and people are being warned away for a good reason, particularly now temperatures are starting to rise.

“Hopefully if the schools are back next week they can start to impress the dangers on pupils before we have a tragedy on our hands.”

Coun Janet Storey, who sits on Hyndburn Council, said: “There are quite a few places in Clayton where the canal just presents a really tempting shortcut or place to play for the kids.

“They think they’re indestructible but risking your neck just for a slide on the ice is crazy. It’s dangerous and they need to know that.”

Look, you are completely and totally wasting your time telling these idiots not to do it. Let them learn a very valuable lesson in life - go do it and see what happens. If they don't want to listen, just let them get on with it. Because others then have to put their lives at risk fishing the idiots out. But you are wasting your time. Surely you must realize this by now?

I believe this is nature's way of sorting out the idiots before they become a drain on society.

When they are drowned, and go to the big playground in the sky.
We will all say how great they were, and how they will all be missed.
Some of us will just smile.

Let them learn the hard way, and let the parents do the rescuing. The world is full of idiots, as others have said, this is just a form of natural selection.

LET HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN, CAST THE FIRST STONE!
Come on Tony, we've all done stupid things in our youth, that make us cringe now. To suggest anyone would find amusement in a youngster being killed in an ice related incident, astounds me.

Take a chill pill,Crispy:Some of us aren't as enthusiastic about today's youth as you are.
10 out of 10 for being 'with it' as far as kids go,but most of us have to endure their intrinsic ability destroy, despoil, defa
ce,stamp upon and murder at will, anything they please.
I envy your optimism,as I am far too cynical when it comes to teenagers. I see them as dumb, violent, uneduca
ted sub-humans that seem to have a focus on destroying everything that is nice and good...maybe it's just me!
Still,if I am right and should anyone need to get 'rid' of one of their local teenage maggots,I understand that Saddleworth Moor is very good this time of year...;-)

You only have to look at the photo on the front page of the Telegraph -their scrote-uniforms define them. If they weren't playing football on the canal they'd be drinking, smashing things up and generally annoying everyone.
Let 'em go through the ice; the world would be a nicer place without them.
That's not a very nice comment, I know, but I've yet to see anyone dressed in that sort of gear who was nice.

i'd to waste my money ringing the police to inform them of a drunk on the canal bank. he nearly walked into the canal twice whilst i could see him. can't think of a more stupid palce to walk drunk in this weather.
so people have no sense.

i can only agree. those who live by the sword must expect to die by the sword unless very fortunate.

it`s said `daring and exciting` people like this `live life to the full`, i always find this ironic comment when most of that type are dead by 30. hardly a full life, eh?

In my previous post, I thought the point I was trying to make was obvious. Namely, that in our youth, we have all done stupid stunts, against all advice & common sense, but have gotten away with it. I was referring specifically to the news article, not juvenile delinquency in general, where I can assure you, I am most definitely not in the "do-gooders" camp.
It's just that, unlike some others, I would not take any joy in a youngster dying, even if they would not have been a great addition to the gene pool.
As for the Saddleworth Moor comment, Hellboy, it's a very murky pond you swim in. Try therapy.

Yes,Crispy,it IS a very murky pond I swim in,but I'm afraid the only 'therapy' that will work for my condition is that I no longer have to endure teenage gene pool dodgers and adolescent oxygen-thieves messing up my desire for a quiet and peaceful life.
I don't consider it TOO much to ask,do you?
The saddleworth Moor comment was merely my 'dry' sense of humour getting a little ahead of itself. If I have offended your delicate sensibilities,I apologise profusely.

sh1t why didnt any of em drown, reflection on the last 13 years of labour nambyism, i for one agree with Tony-Wales, shame their scrounging "parent(s)" are not there to explain how dangerous it is, end of the day reading all these comments on here leads me to one conculusion, how do i emigrate to a less broken society engineered by the labour party?

Talk about judging a book by its cover. Kids will be Kids and have done these things forever and will until the cows come out. Some of the most obnoxious and arrogant people i have ever met are of the older generation i was brought up to respect. I was in the morrisons car park the other day when an elderly couple parked up next to my car (unaware i was sat in it) when the male flung his door open and smashed into the door of my car, I opened my window looked at him and there was just a blank expression and not even a sorry. I held myself, and as there was no visible damage I saved the guy from a rollocking incase he keeled over. Numerous occasions I open doors into establishments for our older generation and the response is as if ive just took a dump on there door step. If a kid wears an adidas, nike etc tracksuit it dosent make him/her a bad un nor does it mean there parents are scroungers and does certainly not mean they deserve to be involved in a tragedy. Take a long look at yourselves because the things you come out with i wouldnt p**s on any of you if you were on fire. The saddleworth dry sense of humour is nothing but SICK and if someone said that about my child, put it this way I wouldnt laugh.

Lets get things in perspective here. I remember walking ACROSS Windermere during the big freeze of 1962/63. The ice was 2' thick in places and was full of people walking and ice skating. Mind you there were also large areas cordoned off. Ten years later I found out why when I SWAM across Windermere. It is full of hot springs which needless to say I did not want to swim out of.
Yes looking back it was madness but lets take the cotton wool wrapping off please. Our kids are so soft these days because they've not been allowed to roam, injure themselves, or learn the hard way. There is no fault these days only blame.
Oh before I forgot I was wearing a hoody at the time of walking across Winderemere - mind you it was about -10c and I was only 7/8 years old.
