Lancashire Police issue fresh icy roads warning

Out braving the snow - but there is more to come Out braving the snow - but there is more to come

THE big thaw could be set to follow the big freeze in East Lancashire.

The Met Office predictions of heavy snowfall on Sunday didn’t materialise and the county instead woke to rain, sleet and snow showers as temperatures hovered around one degree celsius.

Warnings of widespread icy roads remain in place on Monday morning as the showers fall on frozen roads, adding to the hazardous driving conditions.

However, police reported no road-related incidents over the weekend.

Northern Rail services in the area were running as normal this morning and a number of roads have re-opened, including Blacksnape Road at Hoddlesden Road (still closed near Darwen), Bacup Road, Burnley, and Crown Point Road, Burnley.

Only a handful of East Lancashire schools are closed today.

Meanwhile, the county council roads boss has admitted they could run out of grit if the area is hit by snow again.

Coun Keith Young, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for roads, said the authority only had enough grit for if the weather remained clear.

He said: "If we get another blizzard then, like other authorities, we are in trouble."

Blackburn with Darwen's roads chief, Coun Alan Cottam, said the borough had 'more grit than we expected' after a delivery last week.

He said bus routes would continue to get priority treatment.

Why are the Council's not better prepared?
Pendle Borough Council is a disgrace after many streets in Nelson were not gritted.
I was walking this morning when i saw the result of this failure an ambulance unable to get up Railway st in Nelson and at the top of this main street was a school double decker bus stuck and sliding down the hill.
Where is the gritting plan the LIB DEMS promised?
In event of emergency ambulances, police cars and fire engines are UNABLE to get up ad down most streets in Nelson.
What a disaster!
Cut the pay of senior managers and chief executives and spend it on buying extra grit and gritters for Pendle.
What do people pay their council tax for??

A tale from me, at 9pm on the 4th of Jan I set off to Bolton Hospital. Driving out of Darwen was possible although no roads had been gritted and the snow covering the road. Whilst driving over the moors I guessed that it would be ok at the border. Crossing the border at the moors and the road had been gritted and the traffic had crushed the grit nicely so travelling at normal speeds to Bolton was perfect. On the way back the same thing BUT Darwen main rd had now been gritted prior to Bull Hill. Borough Rd and the moors were now terrible. Why grit main rd in Darwen if not gritting over the moors? surely main traffic is going to cross the moors and it was only one more mile of gritting!
Anyway everyone sits at home now

They will probably be back on later, bus company rightly just making sure the council do the job and grit and remove ice from the main roads.

I have really had enough of the council saying they are "deploying all available resources"

Rubbish as we as a species have know about snow for thousands of years. we can put a man on the moon, but can we get a snow plough and grit wagon around the streets of Barnoldswick.

As i have mentioned to the council we folk of barnoldswick do occasionally like to venture out of the town if only to bay at the full moon.

surely by now it is not beyond the wit of man to be better prepared.

Our street has NEVER been gritted for more than two years, the hill at the end had been gritted this year, maybe a couple of times.

so again I cant get of the street to my office in manchester, yet my collegues from other towns can get into Manchester.

the last time i saw the orange flashing lights, of the gritter, coming up the hill, it STOPPED at the bottom & went away!!! good god. this ridiculous, i shall be writing for a credit on my council tax for
no gritting,
no rubbish collection, despite the wagon driving passing the house, same with the recycling wagon.

I REALLY REALLY hope one of the Pendle "Executives" requires a emergency vechile and it cant get to them because of lack of gritting!

But then i bet their road is gritted!!,

One council on the news this morning actually has workers with wheel barrows & spades gritting footpaths near elderly residents and trying to grit side roads, i suppose this will be against "elf & safety"

The excuse we get of 20 year snowfall etc is rubbish, to be in the 21st century and not have some planning for such events when the Met Office, has been forecasting this for weeks, maybe the council shoul replace the seaweed in the as they are as much B***** use!

I am so angry as four people in our house are yet again unable to get off the street to go to work, putting two jobs in jeapordy for yet another no show!

Do you wander around with your eyes shut Capitabackhander? I saw gritters working on Sunday night and Monday morning in Darwen - they drove past my house. Some people think grit is some sort of fairy dust that makes snow magicallly disappear. Take today for example - right now it looks like the road in front of my house (I live on a key route) LOOKS like it hasn't been gritted BUT I KNOW it has - the gritter went past spreading grit aboput 30 mins ago. Because of the snow falling and people heeding advise not to drive it hasn't been ground into the snow properly. Hardly the councils fault I would have thought.

The gritting is done by Lancashire County Council which is run by the Tories. They slated Labour last year and promised things would be better in Pendle at least. Like others, I am appalled at the service this winter, the Tory lot in Pendle are very quiet this year.............

The answer to this problem is surely for towns to take back responsibilty for their streets etc. Let's be realistic, how can it be possible for someone in Preston to know what it is really like in Pendle? I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that whatever party is in power at County Hall, they really don't give a ****, and the execs and councillors just keep trotting out the old excuses, i.e. only once every ten years, lack of money/ manpower/machines etc etc etc.

The buses have stopped running locally because the rods in Blackburn and Darwen have not been gritted. We have gone from not gritting side streets to not gritting main roads. Perhaps the Telegraph could pose the question to those with responsibility about why this has been allowed to happen?

Get outside, get cold for a bit. Build a snowman or maybe a snowball fight with your kids or anybody that is willing. It won't be long before we're not here to enjoy it, so make the most of it and if you don't like the snow, why don't you just shut up and let us that do have fun.

Thousands accross Lancs have not been able to get to work you daft so-and-so! All you can do is think of yourself, when lots of elderly people in real need are stuck inside. Get some perspective on life! It's just a bot of snow, all will be fine in a week and you can go back to work then.

No in answer to your moronic question. I was stating fact, last night the A666 in Darwen had NOT been gritted and it had in Bolton. The Tories have been in control of LCC for half of last year and they (and your Lib-Dem pals) constantly criticised Labour's gritting policy. They could have changed it.

Janet Anderson MP sensibly moved to a street which is on a grit route. Maybe you did too ? Shame the Tory County Council hasn't gritted it nor re-filled the grit box !!

Or maybe they did grit the lane, only for the grit to fail to have the magical properties to remove 8" of snow ?

Oh Dear, Oh Dear

BWDBC have run out of grit and are buying table salt! It just about sums up the service we receive from the people we've elected to spend our council tax.

We've been told that only A & B roads will be gritted to preserve stocks. Why then, for instance, has Pleasington Road, been regularly gritted over the holiday period whilst other (shall we say more underprivileged) areas been neglected?

The people who drive the gritters have done a fantastic job but are sadley hampered by the people paid to make decisons.

I think that BWDBC really need to adopt a more open and honest approach. I quite willing to revise my opinion/comments if anyone as a more informed view.

Working class areas( those with a high indices of deprivation) receive little gritting compared with high income middle class areas.
THIS can be observed in Nelson!
This is the result of negative bias against the poor and weak in our society.
IT is a disgrace and one that poor people need to come together and raise with Lancashire County Councillors and the TORIES in power.
WHY have the streets in NELSON around primary schools NOT been gritted for the last 4 weeks?
REFUSE to pay your council tax until the "middle class mandarins" sort this out!

"Burner" it is a fact that social mobility between working class and middle class has actually DECREASED since the early 1970's. A leading think tank published the report some 5 months ago. This fact is also supported by numerous academic studies on this area.
So clearly it not from the "Edwardian era" but an issue of relevance in the 21st century. You need to get the facts before making baseless statements which you continually continue to do.
This event is not a record snow event.
In the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's snow would fall to a depth of several feet regularly. There was less chaos then due to EFFECTIVE GRITTING of all main streets in towns both by gritters and by workmen. Those were the days! "Burner" can you remember that far back?
AS for communism credit has to given to countries ruled by communist governments at the time who despite harsh winters and huge amounts of snow continued to function normally. Yugoslavia, Poland, East Germany, Ukraine, Georgia, Russia, China.
so lets follow these countries and waft the red flag to help us cope better with these conditions

I walk to work in these conditions. I then do my best, whether that be refuse collecting or driving on trecherous roads with grit throwing it out on where-ever I'm told to.
Only for me to read about how bad the council workers are and your bin as not been emptied. How inspiring you all are.

Big pile of grit in the lorry that they were ferrying in a wheelbarrow to pedestrian areas outside thetown hall. Sounds good, huh?
Wrong. There was four or five inches of snow on the ground and the muppets were scattering spadefuls over entire areas of snow -a complete and utter waste of grit/salt.
They should have cleared pathways with their spades and gritted those. Instead, 8 hours later, the town centre is just one big mush of snow.
Absolutely unbelieveable. Morons.
They might as well have gone up on the moors and just scattered it around. Pointless. I haven't the words (without swearing) to describe this sort of stupidity.

Congratulations to Northern Trains & Network Rail for keeping our trains running throughout the day with almost no cancellations or delays. Disappointing that the local media didn't report this and only reported the odd delay instead of the positive news.
To those who sat in traffic jams and live and work within a mile or two of a station perhaps it would be worth noting that our local rail service is running well.

I'd take him up on the offer, too, out of civic spirit. I wouldn't be able to do too much because I too have a fragile lower back, but I would be willing if the council made an organised call for volunteers. However, I'm not about to wander around Darwen on my own with a spade.
If the council had the nous to organise volunteer groups in times like this, they might be quietly surprised at all the big mouths like me who would be willing to assist.
And I wouldn't want your money.

Well said Hopping mad!!

People are too quick to moan about the gritters - yes the roads are icy - its winter!!!!

I've travelled out today, and the roads are not too bad - i live on a side road (at the bottom of a hill) and once i managed to get out of there it was not too bad. This morning i got the train to Accrington - they are running a normal service.

My bins have not been emptied for four weeks either - so what! its really not the end of the world!!!

People in this thread are clearly enjoying a good moan. You've had a go at the schools, now lets start on the gritters - how many of you would actually want to dothe job of a gritter - honestly???

I can think of a million and one other things to moan about (if i could really be bothered)...

Get over it and leave the people who are actually doing the best they can to get on with it.

Once last thing: Hopping Mad - did any of these wingers actually come and help you out this morning? I think i know the answer

Hopping Mad and ice ice babay, I take your point that yeah, I'm 'sat on my arse doing nothing to help' and that's a fair point -to a point.
But go down Darwen today and you can see where the snow has been cleared and then gritted and the places where the grit was just scattered over snow.
I'm no expert, but the resources could have been better used.
Does anyone seriously think that if I'd gone to the grit team and eithera) offer to help or b) suggested a better way of doing it, that anyone would have taken any notice of me?
Perhaps if the council had a database of volunteers who were willing to go out and help the crews, and could provide us with suitable snow-clearing spades/shovels (not garden spades) and stiff brushes, they might get some help. There are lessons that can be learned from things like this if anyone in authority is prepared to take a little gamble.

You mean like they do in Kent? They have such a volunteer circle of people to call on during extreme weather conditions. I should know, I used to live there! They also have such things in America, other countries who are more prepared when this weather arrives. Once people know that such things exist, most are very glad to help. Because then they feel like they are doing something to help. The absence of such schemes may be what is making people feel useless. Just an idea. Because those schemes are organised normally by town councils or county wide or within the communities themselves. It is also those same authorities we look to to take the lead in such emergencies. If people can see them as organised then people usually begin to organise themselves. Instead we seem to have this 'panic' setting in. Because many can see that things are in a very chaotic state. Grit is running out in different parts of the country, see what happened in Liverpool this week for reference.

As of moments ago I see that many of Lancashire United's services are still not running. The UK is and always had differing weather positions, simply because of where it's positioned on the hemisphere. Yet, every year, we seem very ill prepared for this kind of weather. The idea of such situations is to learn from them so then next time things are better prepared. That roll lies solely in the hands of the authorities not the general public. It is the authorities the general public look to in times of emergency.

Snow wheels could be fitted or modified onto buses. Yes, it costs money and Lancashire United continue on about LOSING money but keeping services off the roads isn't going to gain them any is it. Darwen has already suffered with an apalling bus service for over 4 months now, there are now some areas in the town with NO service running. No, not everyone can get family, friends, neighbours (depends where you live in Darwen TBH if you CAN ask your neighbour; those living here will know what I mean there) to run them in a car. For those people, some elderly, they'll be trapped in their homes. And this weather is in NO way anywhere near the level of snow experienced in countries that have it daily nearly all year round. Yet, we are now all at the mercy of it. Why? Because services yet again were not ready. It's not the gritter drivers fault but the people higher up whom after all these years still do not have an emergency plan in place. As a service user, tax payer I have every right to voice these concerns BTW. It's not moaning. As for schoolchildren, maybe you'd like to have seen how some of them behaved yesterday in Darwen.

I always think of others, but I also look at the bigger picture.

As to Hopping Mad. Whom do YOU think about in time of trouble like this and whom did you help out today or any other day of your life? Perhaps you haven't yet lived a life, that meaning a life of several decades worth of living and experience. There are some in this thread who have experienced many diverse things in life, not just in the local area. In other words, they've actually lived, seen how others live, and gained some insight into other things. An appreciation of the many serious problems people face beyond the counties boundaries. Is just about 'having fun' and people' getting a life'. Even William Shatner got so fed up with that phrase in the end, because he never intended it to be misused the way you are and everyone else does; he did invent the phrase after all as a bit of a joke during a press session.

Yet, I am forever seeing selfishness wherever I look. In the shops last week, Sainsbury(s). Panic shopping on a scale appearing to indicate the end of the world. Wonder how many thought to NOT take 10 loaves of bread off the shelf, so someone else could at least get one loaf and not got without. There was no milk yesterday in some shops. Online, in the street, you name it. If people thought more about others in the world then it would be a start towards making it better.

I will say no more.

Davidoff,n/a, yes, that's what I would like to see -the council organising anyone who wants to help when we are in situations like this (re Kent).
I moan a lot, it's true, but I think some of that is frustration.
It wouldn't/shouldn't be too difficult to have a volunteer database with the sort of skills/things you can muck in with (a tick box identifying the things and areas you would be willing to help out in?). If there only a few, then text/ring/email them. If there are a lot, then put out messages on LT website/Council website/radio calling for volunteers. It would obviously depend on people's circumstances, as to when and if they could help with any given situation...
And then I suppose we'd get all the bloody bureaucracy, H&S crap, insurance problems, etc .... aw forget it, I'll stick to moaning.

The motorway is clear and the main routes into Nelson are clear.
When over 90% of children who attend primary schools in nelson live within a 5-10 minute walk from the school.
Why then can the schools NOT open??
It is clear that the closures are to suit the comfort of the teachers within these schools.
The buses and trains have been running!
Hospitals remain open!
Council offices are open!
Why can these teachers not be prepared to WALK part of the way to school INSTEAD of wanting to park outside the main entrance to school!
Primary school headteachers and the governors need to be asked SERIOUS questions as to why they are not open on Thursday?
They have had over 3 days to devise contingency plans!!
Better still look it up in the "paper policies and plans" kept inside schools

I think refuse collections have been marvellous. Thank you to those men who deal with the jobs most of us wouldn't do, however I would like the street where I live to be gritted as it is frustrating when one can see the main road yet cannot access it. Winter will arrive each year and thats the way it is so we know there is a possibility of snow and yes I can accept that the gritters may damage cars but why does the parallel street to mine that is double parked always get gritted yet not once in 16 years has this one been done. I think there is also a lesson regarding schools, why oh why cannot the staff be local? I used to teach and in the seventies schools started to employ staff from other areas to bring new blood into the communities. Communities are about the people living in them and when I was a child the schools never closed because staff couldn't get there. They walked! and so did we. The children in Nelson could walk to school but I suppose the staff live elsewhere. It just shows in the circumstances we are experiencing now that we need local and varied shops and local people running the services. On a positive side I have been able to help a few folk and spoken to people I would never have seen otherwise and you know what? I am rather enjoying being unable to travel to my workplace, it's the first long break I have had in 11 years since I gave up teaching. Pity I now have to work another ten years before I can have my state pension but that's another story. As for this weather - just remember it is not for ever and we must not take anything for granted in this life. In 1963 the snow seemed a lot deeper but I was shorter, younger and have fond memories of that year and I hope the young ones of today will look back at all the fun they have had, sliding, sledging, sculpting snowmen, slipping, snowballing and seeing the beautiful scenes and the colourful skies. P.S. help who you can and feed the birds. Bye.

Really? If that is the case, then how come Halfords etc are selling them for use in the current weather? I don't honestly think the police have got so little on their plate that they will be worried about the relatively slight damage these will do compared to the much bigger problem of road surface break down caused by the freeze / thaw that the weather is producing. They are more likely to applaud the sense involved in making essential journeys in a car equipped for the current conditions.

Actually, I can understand why there are school closures.
Firstly, many teachers, support staff etc don't live locally. Gone are the days when people lived close to their place of work, we're a more mobile country than ever - a lot of people commute many miles to get to work, and that journey may currently be impossible or unsafe.
Schools have to have a minimum number of staff to operate safely, and that's for the children's safety. There are ratio's of Adults:Children that have to be met and so on.
If the staff can't physically get to the schools, they can't open.
Not only that, but it also becomes unsafe to allow children on the grounds due to ice etc.
Many schools are pretty old, and lack of funding and investment by successive Governments and County Councils also means many have very inefficient and unreliable heating systems, that often break down, or can't cope below certain temperatures. Again, there are strict laws on temperature levels in schools, as there are in the workplace. As a parent myself (although mine are no longer in school), I would have blown a fuse if the school had made my kids sit there for 8 hours in the freezing cold.

I know, like me, you probably went to school in all kinds of weather, and spent many hours on ice slides down the playground, on your backside, your belly, never knowing if you'd stop before the fence - but we also happen to live in a Compensation Society now - a kid grazes their knee on their way down a slippery path, and the school gets sued. Madness, but we made this society we live in, and also, parents have a right to expect that their children will be kept safe and sound while in the care of the school.

If a school cannot in all honesty guarantee that, they have to close.

Remember, Schools are not offering a life-saving service like Hospitals, nor are they adults making the decision to go to work or not, based on an assessment of the risk, these are children. With children, you always err on the side of caution - I accept you don't wrap them up in cotton wool, but neither do you send them down the pits.

I asked him why he couldn't walk to work like I did to which he said it was too dangerous for him!

When I returned home today, my milk had been delivered and the postman had been. If these and I can get to work, why can't teachers?

Well done CAG1!!!!
Seriously though, well done to the milk men/women, posties, emergency services etc. for carrying on regardless.
However, schools are not an essential service and are certainly not there as a free childminding service like some parents think because they need to go to the gym or shopping or for coffee with a frend.
FATGIT explained the reasons for school closures pretty well, because sadly we do live in a compensation society.
I would have loved nothing more than to get back to work this week, with a normal routine following Christmas, however instead my oldest son is at home with me and my youngest son too because the nursery is closed. I for one don't want to take my children out on the roads/footpaths which have been partially gritted or not gritted at all, why risk injuries etc. when the messages coming out on the news on tv and radio are 'only travel if necessary'. Yes my son's school probably would have stood a better chance of opening had the route been gritted better because it was trecherous on Monday, both roads and footpaths before the bad snow, now will be even worse.
Happy sledging/snowman building!!!

7:56pm Thu 7 Jan 10

Gritting is not the responsibility of Burnley Borough Council, all gritting is the sole responsibility of Lancashire County Council. LCC in their defence spend a lot of time planning gritting routes and purchasing rock salt as well as working very hard to grit the roads. This weather is not typical so the supplies have dwindled faster than they anticipated and demand was far greater than forecasted. Everybody is trying their best, you only need to watch the news to see the pressures the Rock Salt mines are under providing for the whole of the Country. What I do not agree with is how some communities are cut off and minor roads not gritted at all. I think the Community Payback scheme should kit the offenders out and get them clearing ice and snow, supervised of course! They may think twice about offending when they have to do hard labour

fatgit says...
8:55pm Thu 7 Jan 10

Totally agree about Community Payback clearing the pavements - what a great idea and a real way to give something back to the communities they have wronged. Unlikely to happen though unfortunately.

I think the gritting teams have done a fantastic job with the resources available to them, but the Tories at County Hall failed to plan for even a week of bad weather despite slamming the fiasco by Labour last year - just goes to show, there's not much difference in the Labservatives these days.
They promised to keep grit bins filled, so communities could keep pavements safe, and failed.

Now from memory, with temperatures as low as they were lastnight, today, and are predicted overnight, you need a very large concentration of salt:water to start it melting much higher than they use on the roads. Salt is also very corrosive, it kills plants, it affects pets and other animals etc, not something you want massive amounts of throwing about - which we are already doing.
There comes a point where you are simply wasting the grit/salt mix for the sake of it (and it's a non-renewable source too).

Lastly, I do wish certain people would do some reading up on the responsibilities of each tier of local government.
As many people above have also pointed out, District Council's (such as Burnley, Pendle etc) do not have responsibility for gritting roads or pavements - nor do they have funding to do so, County and Unitary Authorities (such as Lancashire County Council, Blackburn with Darwen) do.

Lifeinthemix says...

.
What we have lost today is the will of people in their public roles to actually do their best in the role they are paid to carry out. This is the consequence of removing power from elected representatives and handing it to corporations who are concerned with maximising profit and expanding their inhfluence.

This surely goes against what was Great Britain, I am speaking of Great Britain when it worked.
.
People have forgotton what it means to exist in a free society, it does not just happen, we the people have a duty to ensure our elected representatives do what they said they would do when they wanted our votes.

What we have lost today is the will of people in their public roles to actually do their best in the role they are paid to carry out. This is the consequence of removing power from elected representatives and handing it to corporations who are concerned with maximising profit and expanding their inhfluence.
.
This surely goes against what was Great Britain, I am speaking of Great Britain when it worked.
.
People have forgotton what it means to exist in a free society, it does not just happen, we the people have a duty to ensure our elected representatives do what they said they would do when they wanted our votes.
.
Without the people... the political system will die, they have no backup....
.
The politicians need to remember what they are supposed to be doing instead of cowering under the bullying of Capita and Serco. And to add insult, both the aforementioned corporate bodies are responsible for health & safety...
.
Having pensioners imprisoned in their homes without bread is not conducive to health & safety, all the local shops have run out of bread this will not do.
.
it is up to we the people to make a lot of noise in the right earoles, and demand what we have already paid for is carried out, the grit comes from Cheshire so no excuse whatever...
Good comments, Lifeinthemix.

They've taken away our sense of pride, our dignity, our community spirit, our generosity, our personal responsibility... and they need to give it all back so that we can start to function like a people, like a nation, again.

Good attempt at a joke, will go over the head of many ;)

I personally have checked on 3 neighbours but was nicely surprised to find I had been beaten to it by many....

Hi All.

The state is taking our power away from us...but....
.
They can only do this if we let them...we have the power...we are the country.
.
I am fighting my arse off at the moment, Peel Park basically banned me from the school for asking to see my sons exercise books...and a few other requests... Think about it...a school telling the parents what is and what is not??
.
They want our power, i say I dont think so....
.
The snow has definitely got people moved to comment, why do we not together lobby the telegraph to present a vote....
.
The vote
.
Do we allow Capita and the Crown to dictate terms to our elected representatives be it under H&S or Contingency...
.
Or...
.
Do we demand our elected reps do what they are mandated to do...administer the will of the people under common law?
.
Crown statutes see us all as assets, common law sees us all as human beings with rights under god, and so above any king queen and pope or indeed any banker, although they are all w-bankers....

I contacted the council after our crash on the 4th of Jan. Another man who had his car crashed into on the same corner had also contacted them. Another man who works on that road also reported it early in the morning. All of us were told "when we get round to it"
Having only had my car 2 weeks, and knowing the council had this dangerous situation reported counctless times, and knowing pedestrians were walking in the road to avoid the ice but cars and vans were sliding dangerously close, I never let up.
I called everyone in the council I could. Pointing out their legal responsibility AND telling them I would also report their stance to the paper incase anyone was injured or killed.
I finally got through to the Man in the ENVIRONMENTAL dept (in case anyone wants to know where to find him), who is responsible for the gritting and gritting orders...he told me straight, no one was going to come as they had run out of grit/salt for the trucks.
Eventually, I forced him to send someone out to grit manually.
It simply isnt good enough!
Despite saying otherwise, they had every intention of merely pretending they would deal with a lethal situation and never intended to deal with it at all.
Bolton council (where I live) have tried their hardest to keep up and things are only just struggling now.
Blackburn stated on the 23th, to the papers, that they had AMPLE supplies! But not only do they run out, they pretend they havent.
No wonder people die on average 8-15 years earlier in Blackburn!

To add, Bolton council are also placing skips and big bins on many key points for people to get rid of their rubbish more easily.

Good BUT VERY OBVIOUS. You could always use the skips they have out for the Christmas trees. Don't leave name in your bag just incase a jobsworth gets out of the office. There is one opposite Lidl Darwen in the car park of i.e. Jacks DIY... Had one tree in the other day.

To add, I have just read that this will be the local collection site for rubbish on Tuesday if you live on a side st. and bin wagan can't make it. Place is rear of Edward Street, opp Vale Street – 9.45am – 11.15am.
Read it here at 12pm - traffic chaos as Darwen residents wheel their rubbish across main rd and slip down Vale Street.
I think a better idea would be for residents living on a side street to put the bins out the back alleys like normal and for the bin men and/or residents to wheel bins to the bottom or top of alley, residents to collect them later with neighbours helping. To simple?

This is getting really boring now , is there no other news than the weather? it's cold it's Icy, deal with it, most of you can't remember going to the loo in the back yard, having to dig your way in through the snow, no central heating, cars with little or no heaters, coal fires, god we were tough in those days, there's nothing new about snow we had it before, & we also had a council who dealt with it,
The country is Broken can't & do the job won't do the job, do what us brits do best & deal with it, instead of living in namby pamby land of the soft, yeah I agree we do need a better service but until the election nothing will change, & whoever gets in will have to undo all the wrongs done by this govt'.
Or chose to bring the country to a stand still, I would prefer the latter something will have to give , but in the meantime spare a thought for the old & infirm who have been imprisoned over the last 10 days can't draw their pensions, so can't buy food or pay for gas & electric, we all have legs walk to work catch the bus, get up an hour earlier to de-frost the car, stop making excuses for not getting to work or opening schools etc.

Went into Blackburn town centre today. Very suprised at clear surfaces underfoot in the centre ( NOT the Mall !!! ha ha ). Well done, someone has worked hard, but, sadly, it's not far till you meet slush and ice. I suspect ICE before non. Interestingly enough the mechanism in the parking pay machine was frozen. Did some crafty so and so squirt a water pistol in?

NDT , You had a bump not from the road being ungritted but from your own bad driving , I have myself been to Tesco today and yes the roads are not clear but by driving sensibly have avoided any ' bumps ' , as you put it .

I work 20 miles from my house and have made it into work everyday and set off at 6 am , and yes I live on a great big ungritted hill , it has not been fun driving to and fro work in these conditions but my sensible driving has paid off .

If you are an experienced enough driver and know your vehicles limits then no problems should arise , even on the most trecherous of roads !

Did anyone else see the report on the TV news the other night which said that the government delayed informing councils that they could increase stockpiles of salt/sand until the begining of December? If the report is correct, then the goverment, not the councils should be blamed.

little secret,
salt and grit will not melt or deal with snow, snow ploughs will.

move the snow, then apply grit on to the bare road, remembering of course that it all has to be cleaned off afterwards.

best plan is simple, drive slowly, remember that you do not have winter tyres, and brake very gently.

how do I know this, becuase I live in Northern manitoba, where we drive on snow for six months of the year. Plough the snow, apply grit on to the road, salt alone is useless and below -10 will not work anyway, and do what we call winter driving.

and yes I do about britain, I am originally from Burnley, when I was back in december this year the one thing that sticks out compared to any other country I go to is that you drive way to fast!

Oce we lobby to remove all the speed humps, then & only then will snow plough, clear the minor roads, just like the old days, it's all false economy for the LCC because the long term Ice has started to break up the Tarmac on the roads,
I'll cost more in repairs to these roads than it would to cover them with grit also the pavements are suffering too they have started to lift.
Oh but I forgot, theyre not repairing the pot holes either.
Well I for one won't be renewing my road fund licence.

YOU CANT EXPECT ANY COUNCIL TO BUY THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF GRIT JUST TO SIT THERE ALL YEAR ROUND NOT BEING USED. ITS RARE THAT WE GET THIS KIND OF WEATHER AND TO BUY ALL THE KIT REQUIRED TO DEAL WITH IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF MONEY. IF THIS WEATHER WAS EVERY YEAR THEN FAIR ENOUGH, AS IT IS ITS JUST ANOTHER THING FOR EVERYONE TO MOAN ABOUT.

Why are you shouting??
You must be happy with the situation to go on & on since before Xmas,
We get Ice & snow every winter, we might not get the snow as bad but we still get tempratures of minus 5 every winter so the roads have to be salted,
Snow is not new ! we used to get snow drifts up to 6ft in places yrs ago & the only road to close would be Manchester Rd Burnley due to it's height,
Now we're in the 21st century we really should be better equipped for freak weather, the boffins keep telling us about, The weather forcasters warned us about it, what did LCC do about it????? Nothing.
The Country is Doomed were the laughing stock of Europe, Im fed up to the back teeth of having to Dig yes dig my way out of trouble, & getting stuck in the thawing Ice. If I didn't I would be stuck & not get home, but every day is getting beyond a joke,
Just spare a thought for the old folk who haven't ventured outside for over 3 weeks, can't draw their pensions to buy fuel to keep warm
Have a bit of british pride & grit,
Stop believeing what your being told, There is plenty of rock salt. Ok the winsford mine is working a full capacity to get the salt out, You won't see a haulier contracted for getting salt to our local depots, because there still tight & won't spend, the gritters have been told to go out & look busy with no salt in there holds. The truth is out there .
Stop the councils spending on silly sculpures & modern art works on roundabouts that we don't need A grassy flowerbed will do, thats where the money has gone,
we cleared streets yrs ago albeit in 2 days of heavy snow, why not now?
because we all turned namby pamby in this nanny state we call Gt Britain your all prepared to roll over & die, it's a disgrace. the local council is a disgrace, the LCC is even worse.
