A MAN arrested on the suspicion of attempted murder after shots were fired at a family's home has been sectioned.

The man, 25, has been detained under the Mental Health Act after being quizzed by police over the shooting which shattered upstairs and downstairs windows of a home in Whalley New Road, Bastwell, Blackburn.

The news came as five men charged with violent disorder following an alleged fight connected to the shooting appeared before Blackburn magistrates.

And yesterday a further man, 22, was arrested on the suspicion of violent disorder.

A family was in the home at the time when two shots were fired at 4.25am on Monday.

Detective Inspector Andy Hulme said: "Inquiries are continuing and I still urge anyone with information to come forward.

"A number of people have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and today we have arrested a 22-year-old Blackburn man on suspicion of violent disorder. Two people are currently on police bail and one man has been detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act.

"I would like to stress that the investigation into this incident is ongoing and we are keeping an open mind as to a motive for the attack.

"Incidents of this nature are few and far between in East Lancashire and as such we are treating this incident very seriously."

Following the shooting, police stepped up patrols in Bastwell in a bid to deter further incidents and reassure the community.

Before Blackburn magistrates yesterday, five men charged in connection with an incident in Wensley Road on Sunday evening made their first appearance at court.

The court heard it was alleged that baseball bats and steering locks were used as weapons.

The five men who appeared charged with violent disorder were Jameel Mohammed, 25, of Woodbine Road, Imran Din, 23, and Irfan Mahmood, 26, both of Whalley New Road, Ibrar Ashraf, 22, of Whitewell Place, and Asim Khan, 27, of Cross Hill Road, all Blackburn.

They were directed to be dealt with at Preston Crown Court and remanded on bail for the preparation of committal papers.
