A MOTORIST has told of her 'truly terrifying experience" as an 81-year-old grandmother drove towards her the wrong way along the M65.

Alison Currie was in the middle lane as Martha Harwood drove past her in the outside lane. As we revealed yesterday, Martha, of Blackburn Road, Darwen, was confused by Whitebirk roundabout and headed up the exit slip road at junction six.

She travelled the wrong way for 15 miles before police pulled her over at junction 13 Barrowford.

The retired florist has told how she realised her mistake but carried on as there was nowhere to turn around'.

Cars swerved, one piled into a crash barrier with its four occupants taken to hospital and the motorway had to be closed for five hours.

Miss Currie was heading back to her home in Feniscowles, Blackb-urn, after a celebratory meal at Carlos Italian restaurant in Colne when she spotted headlights coming towards her on the westbound carriageway.

The 36-year-old transport co-ordinator passed Martha who was driving a Suzuki Ignis, near junction eight at around 10.15pm on Monday.

She said: "We were out celebrating with a friend who had a heart attack 10 years ago and I nearly had one as I was coming down the motorway.

"It was a truly terrifying experience - seeing a car heading straight for you on a motorway.

"I was in the middle lane when I saw headlights coming up.

"At first I thought they were on the other side of the motorway, but then I realised someone was in the fast lane.

"I actually flashed my lights at the oncoming driver, as I'm sure did other motorists.

"Then the car just passed us.

"It was over in seconds.

"It was really scary and I couldn't believe what had happened.

"It is the kind of thing you only see on Road Wars' or Traffic Cops' not on the M65. We were one of the lucky ones as we didn't hit anyone or anything else and it was extremely fortunate that no one was killed.

"I just find it unbelievable that someone would drive all that way in the wrong direction."

Police said that at this stage they did not believe it was in the public interest to prosecute Martha. They have seized her car and may take steps to revoke her driving licence.

Miss Currie added: "Fair do's to the lady for still driving at 81 years of age, but I think there should be further driving tests or some kind of annual testing for old aged pensioners.

"Today's roads are not the safest place to be at the best of times.

"It is truly frightening when you think how much worse it could have been."

Here are a couple of questions for all those who took the opportunity here to criticise the police action.
1. How would you go about stopping a vehicle travelling the wrong way down the motorway in the safest possible manner?
2. What would be the most suitable 'punishment' for this lady ?
It would be interesting to find out what your ideas are.

Difficult one Captain. By the sounds of it the Police did an amazing job and were probably blessed by lady luck, no-one being seriously hurt or killed. As for punishment, I think revoking her license would be in hers and everyones' best intrests. I'm sure the old dear was petrified and that might explain her decision not to stop. I'm fairly sure she'll also feel bad about the passengers in the car that crashed. Just because the LET didn't publish her remorse doesn't mean she didn't voice them or think about them. No need to be heavy handed with her, just take away her license and call it quits

Firstly regarding stopping her im sure the police have procedures for such an occurrence. Thats not the main issue, the issue is as confused as she may have been by the roundabout, the fact she continued all that way is mindboggling. She said there was nowhere to turn round so she obviously knew she was on the wrong carriageway, could she not have just pulled onto the hard shoulder?? Or exited up the hard shoulder of a slip road?? She cant away with it by being labelled dotty and the fact she has no apparent intention to stop driving is selfishness in the extreme.

As for the woman in the article....terror?? If she had swerved doing 70 in the fast lane then fair do's. Just wants her face in the paper me thinks...the four people who were injured have a much better case to claim terror!!

Re my first question, i'll just throw an alternative ending in to provoke more reaction.....
The police officer, knowing that he is about to come across a vehicle travelling towards him on the wrong carriageway, decides to protect other motorists by using his vehicle as a physical barrier (which he did in this case). The approaching vehicle fails to take action upon seeing the police car and slams head on into it. The driver is killed instantly. What charges would the police officer face?
This should be interesting.

Fountainhead, I think your last paragraph is a tad unfair to the lady in the article. On a motorway at night time and at motorway speeds, its very difficult to assess what lane vehicles are travelling in, so it would have been a very close call for this lady to say the least. Next time you're on the motorway at night, try to guess what lane vehicles a couple of hundred yards ahead of you are in, and i'll guess that you wouldn't be right more than 50% of the time (unless you guess middle lane each time, which is where most people seem to stay these days)

How about naming that stretch of motorway : The Martha Harwood Way - Just an idea folks.

On a serious note, it makes a pleasant change having an elderly person making the headlines without being attacked or mugged by some scumbag.

I agree with the majority of people who think Martha should have her licence revoked (for ever) but what good would come out of prosecuting her? Penalty Points? A Fine? A Ban? All it would do is cost the taxpayer and what good would it do?
Fortunately nobody was seriously injured and insurance companies will pick up the tab from those who need to claim, I don't think Martha's insurance company will be disputing any liability nor would she ever get insurance again after this episode.

The other interesting thing to note is Miss Currie was in lane 2 of 3 when the incident occured. Who was she overtaking, the invisible man? The highway code clearly states that anything other than lane 1 is an overtaking lane, had Miss Currie been in lane 1 where she should have been she would have had lane 2 as well as lane 1 (had she pulled onto the hard shoulder) seperating her from the oncoming vehicle, maybe this will encourage Miss Currie to drive "properly" on our M-Ways.
To summarize, Martha needs her licence revoking but lane hoggers should also be made an example of!

Yes, but she didn't kill your kids did she? A little extreme I'd say.

However I would make everyone retake a driving test when they reach 65 and to be retaken every 3 yrs there after. In the US you have to have your eyes tested every 5 yrs no matter what age you are.

If the above is true then there is no doubt she should have her license taken off her.
