Six Manchester United fans in court over disturbance at Blackburn Rovers game

SIX Manchester United fans have appeared in court following a large number of arrests before, during and after the game at Blackburn Rovers on April 19.

Eddie Harrison, prosecuting, told Blackburn magistrates that about 300 police officers had been deployed on the day of the match at Ewood Park on Saturday April 19 because of widespread trouble at the corresponding fixture last season.

A total of 64 fans were arrested, 61 of them United supporters.

Jonathan Slater, 32, of Ashburnham Road, Northampton, pleaded not guilty to being drunk and disorderly in the Fernhurst pub and was remanded on bail.

Christopher Walford, 18, of Cartmel Close, Winsford, Cheshire, pleaded guilty to the same charge and was given a conditional discharge for six months and ordered to pay £50 costs.

Ian Huggan, defending, said his client was currently studying for his A levels and had an offer of a place at Durham University.

"He accepts he had too much to drink and became disorderly," he added.

Marcus Webster, 18, of Highgate Lane, Stalmine, Poulton-le-Fylde, another A level student, pleaded not guilty to using threatening behaviour and was remanded on bail.

David Anthony Merrack, who was one of a number of people who ran onto the pitch when United scored a late equaliser, was not made subject to a football banning order after the magistrates accepted it had been an "isolated and impulsive" action.

Merrack, 20, a management trainee, of Chosen Drive, Churchdown, Gloucester, pleaded guilty to going onto the playing area and was fined £100 with £65 costs.

Ian Huggan, defending, said there was no risk of violence or disorder from his client in the future.

"This was a moments stupidity which was totally out of character," said Mr Huggan, who produced a bundle of character references.

"He has never been involved in any disorder before despite travelling all over the country and to European away matches to watch his team.

"At the slightest hint of trouble he moves away and that had already happened when things became a bit lively in the Fernhurst before the game."

Nikki James Benson, 19, of Whitley Road, Collyhurst, Manchester and Kyle Buckley, 18, of Manchester Road, Droylsden, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a direction given by a police officer to leave the area and not return.

They were both fined £50 with £65 costs and made subject to football banning orders for three years.

The court heard that both men got off a train at Darwen where they were confronted by police officers.

Acting on intelligence provided by Greater Manchester Police, both men were ordered to leave and put on the next train back to Manchester.

But they got off in Bolton and returned in a taxi.

They were arrested when they were seen near the ground. Neither had a ticket.

So where does the club penalty of the £1000 fine apply for entering the field of play? Why are the Utd away fans allowed to stand in a seated terrace at every ground they attend? All other fans in this country are constantly reminded of the apparent ground safety rules and usually ejected for persistently standing. Yet again the failure to enforce a couple of basic rules sends out the wrong message and costs the clubs for 300 extra police officers in attendance to mop-up the unruly mob ignorant lightweights.

What a load of rubbish, every time blackburn got a decision or when they scored your "quietly spoken" lot were over the ad hoardings and giving it loads so lay off it. If it wasnt for that path there would of been a 50+ of you in court for nothing.

Any Barca fan would tell you they are not a Spanish club but a Catalan one, they don't even speak Spanish.
But how would the London, Irish and Singaporean based fans of the "biggest football club in the world" Man U with a laughable one Champions League final apopearance in 39 years know that?

Dave has a full head of hair and was on completely other side of the ground from the CIS stand. The bald headed guy was the one who went by the players, and most likely the bloke you are on about.

Get your facts right.

Am I the only one to see the desperately sad side of morons coming on the pitch? So called good natured pitch invasions in the 60s developed into running battles in the 70s, fences in the 80s and deaths at Hillsborough AND other grounds. I am desperately disappointed that banning orders were not issued, whether they are Blackburn or Man U.

As for the childish comments which excuse drunken behaviour I feel pity for those making them. The good thing about football now (as someone who watched through the tough 70s) is that families can come to a game. Time to kick the yobs out again. Also time for the Fernhurst to ease up on the money making and slow the booze sales down.

I'm suprised these posts surived the "purge" - speaks volumes.

Anyway, this is a classic example of your typical out of town Man U fan - it's no wonder people rightly view them as clowns. Shame as I personally don't mind either the team or their "real" fans.

So many of these so called fans of Man U appear to have a personality disorder of some type and seem to be mentally feeble, which is maybe why they can't cope with following their home town team who might lose more than they win. Maybe they are all the sickly kids who got bullied at school.

Also its amazing what can be done once you know someones IP.....and I know soooo many tricky ways to find it, so behave as if your talking one to one.

I will honestly laugh my head off if Chelsea win the Premier League and the Champions League. And us Rovers fans will remember that we took that vital two points off you!!! Your Cup final will be against West Ham when they smash you up like they usually do!!! Anyway, jog on back to Hampshire and get a life!!!

Yeah we bought it, at the first time of asking! Unlike the 25 years of top dollar attempts United had at buying the thing before Fergie sorted you out.
Small town in Burnley? Burnley has our post code; it's an annex of ours. Speaking of location, your team don't even play in Manchester.

Laughing at ya!
