STUNNED drivers are being forced to hit the brakes by groups of ducks crossing a main road in their annual pursuit of sanctuary.

The birds bravely make the short trip from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to the River Darwen each year to escape the icy elements of their natural habitat.

And it is not uncommon to see them on their journey, according to residents on Preston Old Road, Blackburn.

William Arnold, who lives on the main road, said: "I think they are going to Darwen River because the canal has been freezing over. They often pass through our garden."

Maureen Elwood, another resident, said the ducks risked being attacked by other birds in unfamiliar surroundings.

She said: "It's quite a sad story. They use our pond as their home and nest near it, but magpies end up killing them." Homeowners in Preston Old Road said their gardens were "practically wildlife reserves".

Jeanette Ianscough, who works for the RSPCA, said ducks were prepared to go to great lengths to find somewhere to nest.

She said: "It is quite common for ducks to nest away from water and after the eggs hatch, to lead them back.

"They will often cross busy roads to do this and the best thing to do is leave them alone.

"Even if the magpies are killing them, humans should leave them be."

A passer-by on Preston Old Road said a variety of other birds could be seen in the area.

She said: "There are all sorts of birds on the road at this time of year.

"Ducks, swans, geese, pheasants, woodpigeons and magpies all seem to hang around."
