PARENTS battling to save a high school from closure are appealing to the community to have their say "before it's too late".

Beardwood Family Action is campaigning to save Beardwood School, which is earmarked for closure under Blackburn with Darwen Council's £150million Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme.

The consultation comes to an end tomorrow, ahead of Blackburn with Darwen Council's executive meeting the following day when members will consider the proposals.

Beardwood Family Action is urging the community to give their views and voice any objections while they still can.

Group spokesman David Smith, whose four children are former and current pupils at Beardwood, said: "Parents and the wider public have the right to make representations to the council, and this is the last official consultation.

"This is the last chance we have to tell the council this shouldn't happen - this proposal is bad for Beardwood and bad for Blackburn."

The Government-funded plans would see the Preston New Road school close by 2012 and its 1,000-plus pupils and staff sent to other schools in the borough.

Three new "superschools" are to be built at Witton Park, Pleckgate, and a new East Blackburn Community College which would replace Blakewater high school.

Closing Beardwood, one of Blackburn's best performing schools, has prompted passionate campaigns from students, staff and parents alike.

The council said it had been earmarked because of a predicted fall in population figures in the west of the borough, and the site's "limited potential" for development.

Statutory notices announcing the planned changes were published at the end of November, for an official public consultation period of six weeks.

All views on the closure of Beardwood and the adjustments to the other affected schools need to be received by Ben Aspinall, Overview Scrutiny and Elections Support Manager, Blackburn with Darwen Council, Democratic Services, Town Hall, Blackburn BB1 7DY, by January 9.

I attended this school in 90 - 95, its not a bad school, like some of the comments reflect, you get what you put in and I did leave with some good grades progressing on to A Levels and then university.

However I think the asains and the whites need to start mixing from an early age to crumble the current issues this town is facing for our future generations, where neither the whites / asains want to mix in our town.

St Wilfrids - predominantly white and Beardwood School is predominantly asain, easy fix would be to merge both schools together.

I come from beardwood nd i think Ady Ali is one of the very very few that are thick and do not know a thing about anything no offnce but he probably doesn't even know what day it is. So you can say what you like but together we are a school of unity and if you hurt one of us you hurt us all so don't you dare say bad thigs about my school because as far as i'm concerned it's the best school yet and it's even better than Westholme
Sorry if i hurt you in any way!

I sympathise with Current Teacher. How do you teach someone who doesn't want to be taught? How can you teach others when the likes of Ady Ali make life difficult?

Education is about the indivdual for me, if you want to learn and get on in life you will regardless of the school you attend. As for Beardwood, it is a s***hole, don't get me wrong some quality as come out of there but there has been some scumbags too. People may recall the attack on a defenceless male on Granvlle rd, Blackburn. They were from Beardwood school, another pupil went on to be jailed for numerous street robberies and then according to the comments above we have a current teacher publically slagging off a former pupil!! You must be very proud of yourself, what a shinning example you must set..... You t*t!

Dear Ady Ali. I seem to recall you attending this school and remember how useless an individual you were. Do not blame the staff at Beardwood for your short-comings as many children in your year left with plenty of good grades. In fact Adnan, I seem to remember how useless you were at most things. You were often rude, arrogant and displayed challenging behaviour. The only person to blame for not getting any grades is yourself. Your whole outlook to schooling was poor and this truly maifested itself into you leaving Beardwood School a loser!

As an ex- teacher at Beardwood, the \'literacy\' used in comment above only goes to justify why the school should close.
This is exactly how I would have commented a few yrs ago.

I agree with Annie this does show how Beardwood High School teaches their pupils.

I am living proof & I could go on forever with my terrifying experience at Beardwood.

I think the school should close very soon. As you can see from my name I was an ex pupil at Beardwood.

I was over the moon when I left in 2003 because the school was absolutely dreadful a few yrs back.

I left with nothing no qualifications no GCSE's and this was because of the poor education I was receiving.

I really doubt that the school has changed much and I doubt that the school will improve much in the coming yrs.

So thats why the school should be closed down.

I am also a past member of staff from Beardwood and I would support all Annie said above. I could even go much further, but no doubt I would then be called racist, which I definitely was not before I started workin there. When you see it from the inside you learn.

Annie,
I am not sure how long ago it was that you taught at Beardwood but I would like to invite you into the school at any time of the school day to take a learning walk round the building and meet with the Headteacher, pupils and myself. Then you will be able to make an up to date and informed judgement about the school.

Annie, dont you realise that Bearwood will close and be replaced by an all girls Muslim School. I am sure this ill prepare these girls for an integrated life in Blackburn. Beardwood as improved in both results and integration greatly the last few years. What the proposals will do is create an all girls Islamic school and in doing so a mainly Muslim Boys Community School.I am not sure this is the right way to go.

so annie why exactly do you feel unsafe?

Annie, Darwen says...
5:24pm Mon 7 Jan 08

Hello everyone, this Annie again. I must put the record straight. I have never taught at pleckgate, in fact I don’t even know where it is, only in Blackburn somewhere and Burnley I went through it once and won’t be going again
I taught at Beardwood for 3 year or so, I have also taught at many other schools, mainly in inner city Manchester. I must add that Beardwood was the school with the most intolerant view on integration with the wider population, let alone the standard of English spoken there. The headteacher stated in one meeting that the children should be allowed to speak in their native language rather than English. How are the staff at the school able to teach our language in those circumstances? If the children do not learn to speak and write the English language, how are they supposed to integrate? Yes, there are some ‘English as a fist language students’ (i.e. those who speak English in their homes) as Mr Smith’s children show, but when I was there (only a few years ago) we were talking about 20 in a school of near on 1000.
As the Bishop stated only this weekend, there are areas now which are becoming ‘no-go areas’ and the schools are the places to stop this happening by ensuring the language and culture of this country is taught and respected. I assume that is why the initial commenter was scared of joining schools, he or she may be forced to integrate. This alone is a reason to close the Blackburn schools and maybe even give out the places by pulling them out of a hat. That way there may be a cross population of the communities.
As I stated earlier in my rant, I have taught in many very hard inner city schools over the years and in non of those did I feel as unsafe as a white female teacher. I am sorry if this will ruffle some feather but as we say in Darwen, ‘I speak as I find’.
