Heartache as Blackburn girl’s bike stolen again

A BLACKBURN schoolgirl has suffered double heartache after thieves stole her bike for the second time in five months.

The 11-year-old discovered her bike had been taken from a locked shed near her mother’s home, on the Shadsworth estate, at 6.50pm on Tuesday.

A padlock on the shed, in Glenluce Crescent, had been broken open, and her red and black BMX bike was missing.

The girl’s mother, 41, said: “She was crying her eyes out. Her heart is broken and my child is left without a bike.

“It’s not the first time it’s happened as she, and her sister, had bikes stolen from their aunt’s house, in Orkney Close, in March.”

The mum-of-three urged other residents to be vigilant, as there have been reports of other children’s bikes being stolen in the area.

She said: “I’m angry and disgusted. We can’t keep buying her bikes when thieves are going around helping themselves.”

Poor child, but Shadsworth is a rough council estate and will be subject to thefts. Once the shed has been a target, the thieves will come back to check to see if the stolen it has been replaced.

Just one more incident of theft. It is getting to the stage where people cannot leave anything of value in sight. To steal a child's bicycle is despicable. If this was stolen to sell and get money, how much was the culprit expecting to profit?

Best idea is to security mark all items, and where possible keep them out of sight. Garden sheds are a target, so the answer is not to store items of value in them.

The decent public in general need to make it as hard as possible, and CCTV is a huge benefit. Even if dummy cameras were installed, it might may the thieves think twice.
