Inspectors give Blackburn school top marks
4:30pm Thursday 9th August 2012 in Blackburn
By Bill Jacobs, Local government reporter
A BLACKBURN primary has been judged as “outstanding” in all areas by government inspectors.
Staff from government education standards watchdogs Ofsted gave Roe Lee Park primary on Emerald Avenue just two days notice before checking out every aspect of its teaching , care of children and leadership.
They gave it the top rating for overall effectiveness, achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management, up from good during the last inspection.
The Ofsted inspectors now want to see head Mark Geldard and his staff concentrate on further raising the achievements of the school’s brightest and most talented pupils.
Mr Geldard said: “We are absolutely delighted.
“It means a lot to us that the hard work of pupils, members of staff, governors and parents has been recognised and given the highest grading.
“We are all very proud of our school and what we achieve and we are looking forward to a very bright and exciting future.”
Blackburn with Darwen council’s cabinet member for schools Tony Humphrys said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the school and shows that if you are proud of what you are part of then you can make great things happen.”
The Ofsted report said: “This is an outstanding school that teachers and pupils are proud to be part of.
“They enjoy their work and staff are strongly committed to and successful in helping each pupil to do well and to be the best they can.
“Achievement levels are outstanding.
“From low starting points pupils make rapid progress in English, mathematics and across all areas of the curriculum.
“Attainment at the end of Year 2 is average and is above average by Year 6, although relatively few pupils are currently reaching the highest levels.
“Teaching is excellent and makes learning fun and enjoyable.
“Teachers plan lessons extremely well.
“They make skilful use of well-chosen resources to meet the needs of pupils who respond enthusiastically and enjoy challenges in their work.
“Pupils’ exemplary behaviour ensures their attitudes to learning are excellent, resulting in a calm and orderly environment. They show impeccable courtesy and respect to each other, teachers and visitors.”
