Blackburn council leader takes taxi to lift community campaign

Council leader Kate Hollern Council leader Kate Hollern

BLACKBURN with Darwen council leader Kate Hollern took a ride in a taxi cab — to hear ideas on how to brighten up and boost the borough.

Coun Hollern is seeking to breathe new life into the authority’s ‘Your Call’ campaign to encourage residents and the local authority to join forces to improve their communities and life.

Already streets have been cleaned up, a cemetery tidy is on the agenda, pensioners have been befriended and youth club plans drawn up.

Coun Hollern is urging people to ring, email or text her with ideas and taking a special ‘cabcam’ to record residents’ views.

At the weekend she travelled in a Your Call taxi complete with the ‘cabcam’ to get feedback from locals, which will now be posted on YouTube. Ideas could be as simple as organising a clean-up or painting a wall that has become an eyesore, or it could involve helping an elderly neighbour or starting a bigger project, such as setting up a club to make a difference to young people.

Coun Hollern said: “Simple actions like this will help us get through the difficult times ahead as well as fostering a real community spirit.

“The message to residents is that everyone can make a contribution to making the borough a better place.

“It's your call if you want to do more.”

That's how I read it.

How does that help me?

As I understand it, I tell her what I wish I could be bothered doing, then she tells me that I should do it.
Surely there must be more to it than that.

Here’s an idea for you Kate. How about tackling the problems of street prostitution and drug dealing in your own constituency first would be a good idea. But please do remind us, just how long have you had the responsibility to have done something?

Best not to polish dog dirt but better to clear it up before you put your foot in it which you seem to have done with this amateurish propaganda routine!

Politicians. Living in another world!

A taxi is easy slap her on the back of my bike and I will take her on a motorbike tour of Blackburns with Darwen's pot hole darby dreby. She would be much better off consentrating on getting the ring road finished or at least doing something with the land they have purchased for the ring road project. Its first sight you get going into town from the Wainwright bridge Byrom's old yard looking like a nuke hit it and all the other empty derelict properties around that scruffy part of town. Not surprised that there is lots of kerb crawling and crime going on around Whalley Banks/Bank Top area of Blackburn the council have destroyed the area for a pipe dream ring road that will never happen then wonder why its full of prostitutes and street corner drug dealers...

It's not the first time the Labour Council of Blackburn has destroyed areas of the town for their silly pipe dreams and OBE's . Remember it was the Labour Council who tore up the old town centre, destroying the outdoor markets the beautiful arcades, the Georgian frontages of building that had stood for over a hundred years to be replaced by CONCRETE which, every 25 years MUST have a makeover including serious repair work carried out and also remember it's not even our town centre, it belongs to some multi Insurance, building/shipping conglomerate.

The entire world is owned by private corperate business. Thats why spivs like Cameroon and Osbourne have stolen the power of the land. Banksters rule the world and its only the sheeple who can claim back their rights and freedom like we had in the old world before 9/11. We're existing in times that will go down in history as the most violent times in history and it will take a bit more than a few painted walls to lift the mood of the borough and the rest of the world.

This woman is a waste of space! I contacted her last year to ask for resident parking only as we are plagued by staff and visitors at the Royal Blackburn Hospital parking outside our houses. Every resident on our estate signed a petition demanding action! What was the reply from this woman? We don't have the funds to implement it!!! I suggest she takes the taxi back to Scotland where she comes from!

When she is travelling around in a taxi I wonder whether she sees as many drivers not wearing seatbelts as I do - then add to that the number using mobile phones, and those with children in the back seat not properly restrained. In themselves they are not considered to be serious but these acts demonstrate a complete disregard for the rule of law which is part of the corrosion of our society.

There's a part of this your not quite getting, which is mainly that she wants to do nothing other than ride around in a taxi with a new word someone has made up (cabcam) and take all the credit for the free work that she has got YOU to do.

Perhaps instead of taking a taxi she could walk around some of the filthiest areas of Blackburn, knock on doors and tell the residents not to be so lazy. Some people are happy to walk over rubbish on their own front paths and gardens rather than stoop to pick it up. I quote a very elderly lady I saw sweeping her pavement in the village of Waddington who said "These younger ones don't know how to use a sweeping brush". I was talking to an elderly lady on the bus who said she was no longer able to bend down so had bought a "grabber" so she could pick up litter outside her home. I am all for helping the elderly, but so often they are the ones who despite everything still have pride and strive to maintain standards.
