Plea over landmark Blackburn mill site

THE new owners of a landmark Blackburn mill due to be demolished by next month have been urged to give full details of their plans for the site.

Work to knock down the Sappi paper mill, in Livesey Branch Road, Feniscowles, to regenerate of the land are now close to completion.

Global asset management and advisory firm Black Pearl Capital Partners (BPCP) acquired the 118-acre site after it closed in 2008.

Lee Demolition Ltd expect that demolition work will be completed by August 15.

In April, BPCP submitted a pre-planning application for 350 houses, and suggested it would be suitable for light industry as well.

Proposals for a renewable power generation facility have previously also been mooted.

Coun Derek Hardman, who represents the local area, said: “We have heard nothing about BPCP’s plans since the pre-planning application in April. Local people want to know what is happening.

“When I checked with the council on Friday there had been no further plans submitted.

“The council cannot approve housing without knowing what the light industry might be.

“We need to see final plans for the site – sooner rather than later.”

A spokeswoman for BPCP said there was no one immediately available to comment on the state of their plans.

Great memories of the good old Star Paper Mill.
One by one we have witnessed the closure/demolition of the industrial sites of our great local heritage.
Many of us who worked with pride for these large bygone companies reminisce and shed a tear at their passing

Funny you should mention that, since we recently had to go all the way to Ripon, Yorks to go karting, in the rain. Huge fun.
The only time in life where, being a fat old bloke, means more traction.

You two ought to try asking for green onions in a supermarket..
'I was looking for a green onion around here but couldn't find one, can you help me?'
You could say scallions but it's not as much fun in the looks that you get...

There's an article on the RISI website dated 29 Dec 2011, that tells you all about how they ARE going to build a 35 acre renewable energy park with their partners Aeternum Capital, along with the housing. Sounds all done and dusted when you read it.
This was also discussed at the meeting with Jack Straw.
If they won't tell you, find out yourself! May I suggest more research and less whinging Cllr Hardman. After all, as local residents, we are going to be relying on you to fight any planning applications on our behalf.
