  • "I'm in Bolton and our town is a dump and in terminal decline and we have a new bus station planned next to the train station in 2014 although having seen the design it doesn't look as bad as Blackburn's.That's to be expected as we in Bolton may feel down at the state of our town but we always console ourselves when we look at you lot 12 miles north and think "Oh well, things could be worse,we could live in Blackburn" lol"

BLACKBURN with Darwen Borough Council is referring the design of its £5 million new bus station to a panel of architectural experts despite publicly rejecting a claim it is “ugly”.

The move was revealed by regeneration boss Dave Harling in response to a question to the borough’s executive board by local resident Chantelle De La Croix.

Speaking through a sign language interpreter, she told the senior councillors: “I am against the proposed design of the bus station which I feel is out of character for the town.

“Look at York, Lancaster and Chester where there are old traditional buildings where more people choose to visit.”

Coun Harling said: “We do not think the building is ugly. It is intended to be striking yet functional providing the passenger with a modern, warm and dry facility. The council has recently asked Places Matter to undertake a design review.”

The new glass-fronted bus station is expected to welcome passengers from autumn 2015.

The complex will be sited on part of the town centre’s old market site.
