Blackburn crash victim gran was ‘loved by all’

AN elderly woman killed in a horrific road accident was ‘loved by all’, said her husband.

Maria Parkinson, also known as Marie, from the Bank Top area of Blackburn, was hit by a Volkswagen Golf while crossing the road.

The 79-year-old was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital but died from her injuries.

Mrs Parkinson leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Jim, three daughters, Denise, Patricia and Barbara and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr Parkinson said: “Maria was known as and loved by all as Marie.

“She was the best anyone could wish for and will be sorely missed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“Marie worked for many years at Witton Mill and she enjoyed going dancing and socialising with her many close friends.

“She was a very popular woman who loved life and enjoyed her holidays.

“She was always willing to help anyone and nothing was too much trouble.”

The incident happened in Spring Lane, Blackburn, close to Witton lights.

Police closed the road from the junction with Buncer Lane to Franklin Road.

The 24-year-old driver of the car, who was from Blackburn, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and dangerous driving.

He was given bail until October 16.

A police investigation into the death is ongoing.

Sgt Steve Wignall said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed what happened to come forward and contact the police.

“An investigation has been launched as we try to establish exactly what happened. We have specially trained officers supporting the family at what is a very difficult time for them.”

Such a sad incident and if the driver is to blame (rather than it being a tragic accident), then throw the book at him/her.

So very sad to read, that after 50+ years of marriage, this lady has lost her life due to a road traffic accident. Sincere sympathy to her husband, children and extended family.

There will be an investigation, and hopefully the family will be kept informed, but this is not going to ease their loss.

This 24 year old asain male ploughed into her at least 40 mph, showed no remorse, concern, upset or care that he killed this poor lady, he didn't even go to see if she was still alive! Instead gets on his mobile phone not to ring the police or ambulance service, but rings his boss!!! Beggers belief!! Bailed till 16th October? They should lock him up and throw the key!! RIP Maria, and heart felt condolences to all her family for their loss.

There should be cameras put up at that cross roads, too many incidents and speeding drivers who jump the lights, right near Witton Park School new entrance too.
