Jealous ex in attack on pair
8:00pm Wednesday 4th April 2012 in Blackburn
A JEALOUS ex-lover struck a double blow when he found his former girlfriend in the arms of another man.
Jake Smith swung a single punch at the kissing couple but ended up in court for two assaults for the price of one after his ex and her new beau both suffered injuries.
Blackburn magistrates heard Martin Caddy didn’t know what had hit him and was left with a sore jaw and ringing in his ears after the incident in the town centre. Katie Campbell had a cut on her cheek but was unsure if it was caused by Smith’s fist or the impact with her new part-ner.
Philippa White, prosecuting, said Mr Caddy had been shock-ed by the attack which had taken him completely by surprise.
“He didn’t see it coming because he was kissing Miss Campbell at the time,” said Mrs White.
Smith, 20, of Bonsall Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Campbell and Mr Caddy. He was made subject to community supervision for 12 months and ordered to pay £100 compensation to Mr Caddy, £50 to his former girlfriend and £50 costs.
Mrs White said Miss Campbell had bumped into her ex while on a night out with friends.
They had spoken and she had bought him a drink and everything seemed fine. Later in the night she was outside a bar kissing Mr Caddy when Smith approached and lashed out.
Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client had never intended to strike his former girlfriend. He accepts he threw a punch at Mr Caddy at a time when jealousy got the better of him,” said Mr Taylor. He says Miss Campbell wasn’t just kissing the other man goodbye she was kissing him properly and she knew my client was there watching. He knows this is not the way to sort things out and there will be no repeat in the future.”
