Blackburn education centre launched by X-Factor star

THE latest phase in Blackburn College’s plans to create a ‘world class’ campus was officially unveiled yesterday to rapturous applause and a performance by an X-Factopr star. Education reporter Nafeesa Shan was given an exclusive tour of £18.3million Beacon Centre.

* THE new ‘heart’ of Blackburn College has been completed.

And all staff, students and visitors of the college’s Beacon Centre can feel the wow factor of the new centre as soon as they walk through the main doors.

That’s not to say the building’s exterior isn’t impressive in its own right.

Architects, with an input from college bosses and students, have created an unusual ‘futuristic’ design broken down in three parts.

A silver and black five storey bricked teaching, art and learning resource, centre, meets a three floor blue stainless steel clad block, which is brought together with a centralised glass atrium.

Principal Ian Clinton said the college had wanted to create a 21st century building that could stand the test of time.

He said the further education centre, which has been created on wasteland and a car park between St Paul’s Street and Nab Lane, was the ‘best’ yet The architects have used elements, such as the curved shape, from the university centre and the building also has strong green credentials such as rain water harvesting, solar thermal water collectors, a green roof and bird and bat habitats to encourage ecological diversity.

Originally named the ‘core building’ the Beacon Centre, is now the core campus for the college.

Mr Clinton said: “It is amazing how the campus has changed over the years.

“We wanted to do something brilliant. We have learnt from the other buildings, but we wanted to create a modern building that was timeless.”

Around the atrium, the designers have incorporated 8,500 square metres of teaching space for further education courses in creative arts, fashion and textiles, photography, childhood studies, health and social care and public services.

All visitors are met with a light bright open space where students can be seen hard at work from the IT suites, grabbing a bite to eat in the bistro, working in the resource centre or walking about the building through the glass walls.

At various points students have bird’s eye views across the town through the windows of the top floors of the building.

Over the floors students and staff have access to 65 classrooms, including art studios, a gallery space, IT suites, a photography curve for 2,000 students and 300 tutors.

Deputy director of resources Derek Heap said: “Walking in to the atrium and looking around the building doesn’t show everything in one glance.

“The resource centre wraps around the building and stretches through to the ICT suite which can be seen through the glass from the atrium.”

Yesterday students said they were impressed by the building.

Laura McCabe, 19, from Haslingden, said: “In the old building we were on our own, so it is weird that we will be with other students.

“But we’ll get used to it. There is more space.”

Holly Riding, 17, from Darwen, said: “It is more modern. It is much better than the old building and we will be meeting more students.”

Genna(CORRECT) Dean, 17, from Blackburn, said: “It is bigger, there will be more people in it. It is really open and spacious and welcoming.

“It is great being the first students here and I am glad that I will get to experience it.”

Blackburn College is now planning to extend the University Centre with a new STEM, science, technology, engineering and maths, facility.

* X FACTOR finalist Amelia Lily gave a one-off performance to students, staff and special guests for the opening of the Beacon Centre.

A special stage was set up for the 17-year-old, who performed a 30 minute set of some of her live tracks from the hit ITV show.

They included songs such as Since You’ve Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson and Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

Amelia, who is currently writing material and recording her album, said: “I have never done an event like this before. It is strange because I should be in college but the TV show changed everything.

“It is insane but it is nice to see what goes on in college.”

While talking to students she said: “Believe in yourself. Determination will get you to where you want to be.”

She also signed autographs for guests.

What do you get when you cross a wannabe, MEGA-MINOR educational institute with OXO? . . . . . . . . a laughing stock ! Oh my! How they must be quaking ( or should that be quacking? ) at Oxbridge and Harvard ?

Mr Burner, assuming you are a double graduate of the two institutions you cite, you may like to know that we had 40+ First Class Honours at the College last year. But you're mistaking HE & FE.
I'm sure you meant to encourage our local learners...but most would think you were just slightly off message...I met a lot of hard working, optimistic, vibrant students yesterday, I'm sure they're buoyed by your empathetic encouragment

As an employer, I know exactly how to recruit. Blackburn "University" is a joke!! They MUST not use that word!

First off its a College so comparing to Oxbridge and an american instution is a little redundant. The Univesity Centre that you are referring to, whilst it is on the college campus, it is part of the University of central Lancaster. Which if you did a little research is one of the top institutions in the country. As for you being an employer??? I somehow doubt that.

The Campus has a large building with a sign in 10 foot high letters using the word "University". Are you aware that there are KS4 students in Blackburn schools who actually think that, when they will enrol there, they will be going to a university? - trust me!
.
I don't belittle attendees' achievements. I think the organisation should not use the word "University" anywhere. It is even in this article.
.
You are dead right, wriggler, it IS a college, but they frequently use that word " University". That is misleading to some.

Here we go again....
Wriggler; agree with you, but it's not a satellite of UCLan, it runs programmes validated by Lancaster, UCLan and Glamorgan. Which means that students graduate with a degree from one of those highly respected universities, NOT UCBC.
Burner, where did your degree come from? Was it a university with a higher rating than Lancaster?
It's your right to dislike Blackburn, but what gives you the right to denigrate the effort put in by any student just because of where they attended their degree programme?

Grief Mr Daniels (or is that your literary bene-factor?)
I was dubbed the one man Stalinist destroyer by one of your ilk last week, now Class Enemy?
The College is a bold robust decision taker, local learners respond to that by coming to the College in their droves, our iconic buildings look well across the town & as people travel around it.
The College Board, the membership of which is open for all to apply for, has the chance to complete the campus as a 21st century institution of further & higher education the envy of many & the Pride of Pennine Lancashire.
I think we'll probably act for a positive future not a dismally pessimistic past?

The only thing people get going to that college is spit on your shoe and an education in Urdu swear words. The only skill your students have is to shout mother **** at the top of their voices at every opportunity. Furthermore, Don't pee on me and say it's raining Sybil, the college is dead as soon as taheedal develops it's A level provision. Sorry to disappoint but am still extremely busy generally but people may live (or not) to lament the removable of local citizens (not me specifically) having an effective say in THEIR NHS!
We do need, however, constructive contributions from local people anxious to make the place better for us all.

Indeed Sybil. I seem to recall the local population turned their back on you because of the war in Iraq. Maybe you should enrol and see just what you are missing!

Yes you do, no matter how much you protest otherwise, simply by complaining that the centre doesn't have the right to call itself a University Centre, even though it provides University Education on behalf of existing Universities.
When I was still in education, I attended the University College Salford, which did exactly what UCBC does now. It has now been absorbed into Salford University proper, but I wonder whether you would have objected to that institution calling itself a University College? Or is it just Blackburn that you feel the need to abuse?

Now here is the thing. Blackburn college campus has a FE centre for further education, it also has a HE centre for higer education, As it provides university courses it has a University centre. Surely you can distinguish between the three of those and what level of education they provide. As for the Beacon Centre it is not part of the Blackburn Colleges University Centre it is part of the college campus but has a similar design to the University Centre.

Also, page 2 of today’s paper has Ian Clinton calling Helen Mather, the Dean of the University AND the former Dean of Higher Education. Now, we can discuss this all day, but you have to agree that If Ian Clinton can't differentiate between HE and the University, then there is either no difference at all with calling it HE centre or that I’m in good company with my error.

No you are quite right it is not a university in its own right hence the title "Blackburn College University Centre"(BCUC). Also is University education not a form of "Higher Education"?

Regarding the article you mentioned did you read all of it? if you did you would note that it states "It offers degrees validated by institutions such as Lancaster University, but the college is in the process of securing accreditation to validate its own degree programmes". Hence the term BCUC, that is the building that handles students that are doing university grade courses. Maybe we should campaign to get it named "Blackburn colleges new building which only focuses on university standard work centre"? No wait cant do that still have the term university in there

jack daniels says...
7:23pm Wed 8 Feb 12

Yes. A university is a form of higher education. Hence my comment about it being called the higher education center. I do however have to ask if you know the difference based on your previous comment. Yes. I did read the article and I already knew about the desire for it's own validation. Finally, you can call it what you want, as long as a sense of reality remains.

wrigglers says...
7:45pm Wed 8 Feb 12

I'll tell ya what burner lets agree to disagree, you think that a building that focuses on university standard education shouldn't have the word university in it's title because 16 yr olds think the entire place is a uni. Whilst anyone with half a brain and some form of decent education know that if you go onto the campus that is Blackburn college each building has a title which is usually specific to the courses taught and the standard/level that it is teaching to

Who said you slated any of the staff or students?? I didnt I was merely pointing out that graduates go on to be lecturers at the same institution it happens up and down the country. as for the belittling or in your case trying to belitte maybe you should consider proof reading your comments

Im sorry Jd that i mistook you for burner, you are spouting the same drivel as him after all. people like you are long in the tooth and hate change it is that simple, the college is trying to raise it's profile and in turn will raise that of the town and yet all you can do is slate it. As for the lecturers themselves. It isnt just here that graduates go on to become lecturers at the same place, it happens at all uni's up and down the country, that is a fact but you keep belittling people and places for trying too improve themselves it suits you burner or shoudl that be jd
Ha ha. What a muppet! Do you get so confused that you argue with your own reflection?

The fact that responded to it suggests that you know that answer already so no need for me to answer that. nice change of tactic from name calling to questioning who the post is for.
