Call to ban elephant cruelty probe circus from Blackburn

SHOCKING A video allegedly shows Ann the elephant being mistreated SHOCKING A video allegedly shows Ann the elephant being mistreated

COUNCIL bosses are being urged to ban a circus at the centre of an elephant abuse storm from coming to Blackburn this summer.

Bobby Roberts Super Circus has hit the headlines after secret footage was released by animal rights campaigners showing 57-year-old elephant Anne being kicked and struck with a metal pitchfork.

The circus visits Blackburn every year - and is due at Witton Park again in the summer.

Council bosses said they would review whether to allow the show to go ahead should anyone from the attraction be found guilty of animal cruelty charges.

But there have been calls to stop the circus coming to town whatever the outcome of an investigation by Northamptonshire police.

Yesterday it was confirmed that Anne was being given to Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire to start a new life.

This week Moira Roberts from the circus apologised for the mistreatment of Anne in a barn in Polebrook, Northamptonshire.

The circus said the incidents ‘appeared to be isolated and at times when Bobby Roberts was away for short periods’.

Bosses blamed a groom employed to care for the elephant — and said he had left the circus in the early hours of Saturday morning after the footage emerged. Police are investigating the claims.

But Neil Martin, the general manager at Bleakholt animal sanctuary in Edenfield, said action needed to be taken to stop the show coming to Blackburn.

He said: “The council should revoke the circus’ licence, and the people of Blackburn should boycott it.

“The use of animals in a circus is offensive, but abusing them is disgusting.”

In 2009, campaign group Captive Animals’ Protection Society (CAPS) called on East Lancashire residents to boycott the circus because it featured elderly, arthritic elephant Anne.

Fiona Peacock, from Burnley, who is the spokesman for CAPS said: “We’d call on the people of East Lancashire to boycott the circus and to get out on the street and protest against animal cruelty.

“There’s only eight animal circuses left touring in the country. We urge people to see non-animal circuses instead.”

Sayyed Osman, director of environment, housing and neighbourhoods for Blackburn with Darwen Council, outlined their position: “The issue of cruelty to animals is something that the council takes very seriously.

“We do not host circuses who have exotic animals performing in their shows.

“If any circus organisers that use Witton Park are found guilty of animal cruelty charges we would review our agreement with them and take necessary steps in conjunction with the appropriate bodies responsible for animal welfare.”

The Bobby Roberts Super Circus began its latest tour last week and has been in Warwickshire where it has faced protests.

Mrs Roberts, 72, who runs the circus with 68-year-old husband Bobby and their family, has said they reacted with ‘shock and horror’ when they saw the footage of Anne being abused.

She said that the family knew nothing of what was going on.

In a written statement the circus said: “The film shows an employee hitting our elephant Anne with the back of a pitchfork in order to make her move to one side while her stabling was being cleaned out.

“This is not acceptable nor is it necessary.”

The circus went on to add: “Bobby Roberts has had an unblemished career as a respected animal trainer for over 50 years.

“He is deeply saddened Anne, for whom he has deep affection, and who clearly loves Bobby, should have in any way suffered.”

The police are investigating THIS!

It's the equivalent of me poking someone on their backside with a kitchen fork. Irritating, but hardly cruelty!

That said, these days animals don't belong in circuses.

i saw a report on this on tv yesterday, and the protesters being interviewed where the most 2 faced i`ve ever seen.

one girl was saying Anne shouldn`t be there and she should be placed in a zoo, so don`t tour with the elephant, but put her in an enclosed space, which other protesters want to see the end of.

and another was saying Animals have rights (fair enough) and they shouldn`t be there for our USE, but wait, is that a LEATHER jacket your wearing, did she realize it came from a dead animal that was killed by use for the meat and skin?

animals in circuses has come to an end, and sadly so has the circus, because of all the fuss over useing animals, even if they only use horses, yet you don`t see them protest when police use horses

Animal circus should have be banned long ago. There is much more skill in a human circus anyway. The discovery of the secret footage showing Anne being mistreated is only part of it. Firstly this may have happened numerous times before and not just to her. Secondly, training these animals to do tricks such unnatural things does not involve talking to them. They are often mistreated by the trainers themselves to make them do them. The public must think before going and should not support the circus and should refuse to go to it. The council should not even be letting them have a licence to perform with animals. Bobby Roberts has to take responsibility for the people he hires to look after his animals, so I blame him for the mistreatment. If he keeps animals he should not go away and should do his job properly and look after them properly - which he obviously doesn't! I look forward to hearing that the council refuse his licence and see him go out of business.PS Maybe we can see an animal free circus and Bobby Roberts do the tricks himself!

All Circus should be boycotted and eventually banned, i wonder how many other abused and cruelty to circus animals go unreported.
I would like the trainers and owners of these circus to be put in the ring and abused.

This barbaric show must not be allowed to come to Blackburn, it must be banned completely and never allowed to return as long as they are using animals to perform or promote their show, I watched the video footage and it was horific, the main focus has been on the abuse to Anne the elephant but there was other abuse being done to other animals in the background, ponies being punched and kicked, so it was not just one man as they are claiming, it must be stopped we must not condone this treatment, the sooner they go bust the better.

this is cruel, the man who used the pitchfork needs needs locking up, elephants shoudnt be used in circuses, they should be used on the canal towpaths and charge people to ride on them

If I had seen this happening I would have removed the pitchfork from this cretin and jabbed him with it. that said i would no doubt have been prosecuted and jailed. It does beg the question, why did the person filming this not confront this moron? whilst i despise the person hurting the elephant, i am deeply suspicious of the people exposing this treatment. i wonder if it was a set up to engineer the closure of the circus?

As a reply to Mavrick.........

I really don't think it was a 'set up'.

Historically (here and in the USA), when Animal Welfare Groups have tried to expose cruelty and secure the removal of animals and prosecutions, they have been unsuccessful.

I'm supposing that their success would depend upon:
a) a SUBSTANTIAL amount of film evidence - hence the impossibility of intervening earlier.
b) ensuring a tight and secure legal position. - I'm no expert on the ins and outs of the law but I'm sure there are lots of technicalities to beware of and, quite sensibly, ADI are being very careful. Maybe reasons will become clearer as things develop.

I wish ADI all the luck in the world - they have done some great work over the years!

Delighted that Sam and your paper are highlighting the need for the law to be changed regarding the cruel abuse of animals in the circus, hope the good people of Blackburn help to ban the Bobby Roberts Circus from performing in their town, sincerely, Gerry Black, in Ireland.

Recall back in the late 50's the circus had come to Blackburn
Walking home from Audley Sec School down the main road to the town centre
Three elephants were coming up the hill in the oposite direction
The elephants had a handler out front as they moved quickly
As they passed a fruit and vegie shop, one of the elephants noticed a bananas on a trolley outside on the footpath
It broke rank and charged over to the bananas roaring in delight, swooped on the bananas and scoffed them down, the others followed and mayhem followed as the handler treid to restore order
Chalk one up to the elephants
