First look at Blackburn's new birthing centre

THIS is the first look at the new Blackburn Birthing Centre, which will replace hospital services in the area for “low-risk” deliveries.

Light, luxurious and welcoming, the Park Lee Road facility will be the first of its kind in East Lancashire when it is officially opened tomorrow.

About £900,000 has been spent converting the former Woodlea mental health unit as part of a programme designed to offer more choice and stress-free pregnancies for the region’s mothers-to-be.

And ahead of its launch, the Lancashire Telegraph was invited for an exclusive sneak preview of the centre.

It is for women having “low-risk” births, where problems are not anticipated, but still with professional support and hi-tech equipment on hand.

Caroline Broome, lead midwife at the centre, said: “The building is gorgeous.

"It’s going to be just a fantastic facility for East Lancashire.

"I think we should be really proud.”

The centre, which has full disabled access, boasts four hotel-style rooms and access to picturesque private gardens.

It will be staffed by two midwives initially, plus medical and clerical support.

Caroline, who has 25 years experience as a midwife, said: “We’ve got birthing pools in three of the rooms, which women can use if they want to.

"Lots of women find water, either in labour or for birth itself, very beneficial.”

The centre also features a consulting room for ante-natal checks and a large four-bed bay for mums who wish to stay longer to rest, recuperate and receive support and mix with new friends.

The new £32million Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre, based within the Phase V development at Burnley General Hospital, will also feature a birthing complex when it opens in November.

That centre will handle all East Lancashire's “complex births”.

From November, women will no longer be able to give birth at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

A third centre will then be opened at the new Rossendale Primary Health Centre, Bacup Road, Rawtenstall.

The trust ought to be ashamed of themselves for "selling" this service without fully informing women of the problems. This service is so unsafe, they shut birthing centres years ago due to the risks they posed on women & their unborn.
In my experience there is no time to waste when so-called "low-risk" births have become high risk in a matter of minutes. When this situation happens the staff will have to ring 999 just like any other joe public & transfer a women in labour to burnley. In all this whole process could take 20-30mins. In that time the mother &/or child could be DEAD!
Those of you out there, who's birth plan/labour went to plan? How many of you needed forceps, emergency c-section etc? Also midwives are not competant to look after ill newborn. Or if they need resus at birth, that why the neonatal team where on standby. Seconds count when things go wrong in delivery. I am disgusted to say I work for East Lancs when they're promoting risks to lives to save money!
I really hope that it doesn't happen to you, your family or friends but unfortunately it will & the sad thing is that it most likely could of been prevented!
What's even worse is that Jack Straw & other local MP's know this risk & they are turning a blind eye, because the public aren't complaining about it!

I hate to admit it but I agree. Everywhere else I know of that has birthing centres like this outs them right next door to the clinical services. Having had a stress free pregnancy which went badly wrong at the moment of birth, I dread to think what would have happened if I had been giving birth there.....

the same could also be said the other way round, i was classed as high risk because my blood pressure was a little higher than normal.

the stress of giving birth a blackburn royal actually made it go up !!!

needless to say my so called high risk labour went without an hitch - no medical intention was required, baby born very quickly and healthily.

Agree with above comments but surely the women should get the choices, personally i missed out on a homebirth as a result

hope women have more luck than me

i agree with the comments above labour can not be predicted. My first was classed as low risk but i ended up needing a emergency c section, my second was classed as high risk but sailed passed with no problems

Is this where women lie in a bath of water whilst giving birth? Sounds bonkers to me, but what do you expect from people who think PFI makes sound financial sense!!

how the hell does anybody know weather a labour will be low-risk or high-risk ? Our predicament: my wife is expecting our 3rd baby in december (dont know if its low-risk or high-risk), do we go here and just hope the labour goes ok or do we jump on M65 and hope we get to Burnley before the baby is born. Of all the things a pregnant woman may get anxiety and worry about this should not be one of them. thank you PRIMARY DONT CARE TRUST for the extra stress and worry. Also could you just clarify who is responsible for all this should the worst happen. Just read another LET story today, apparently we might not have enough grit salt for the roads so lets hope its not going to snow in december like it did last year or that trip to Burnley weather in the car or by ambulance is going to take even longer. Good luck to all the other soon to be mothers in Blackburn, in the face of all this you may need it.

“First look at Blackburn's first new condom centre” would have been a much better idea!
Judging by the amount of young girls in Blackburn pushing their offspring’s about is the result of there not being enough useful sex education within schools or knowing the full consequences of unsafe sex.
However, better than being on the dole some could be saying.
