VIDEO: Candidates clash in Blackburn election debate

THE GENERAL election campaign in Blackburn moved up a gear today with the first showdown between the three main parties.

Blackburn Cathedral was the venue, with a theme of 'Can we trust politicians?'.

THIS is a campaign that looks set to be dominated by debates between the three main party leaders.

And it was standing room only at Blackburn Cathedral this lunchtime as Labour’s Jack Straw faced up to Michael Law-Riding from the Conservatives and Liberal Democrat Paul English.

But at times it seemed the event would be remembered not for the candidates on the podium, but because of one who wasn’t - Bushra Irfan.

She is standing as an independent and was furious at being excluded from the event.

As the debate got underway, she clashed angrily with Cathedral staff, and the shouting from her supporters at times drowned out the discussions.

After 15 minutes, police were called and 'moved on' some of the protesters.

Mr English was hoping to match his leader Nick Clegg’s performance last week, which has triggered a surge in the polls for the Lib Dems.

The Skipton councillor was first to speak, claiming the Lib Dems had been 'the least tainted' by the MPs’ expenses scandal.

“Westminster needs cleaning out from the bottom”, he added.

Coun Law-Riding claimed Blackburn had not improved under Labour, while Mr Straw admitted some MPs had been 'on the make' with their expenses, and accepted people were right to feel 'betrayed'.

The audience took turns to ask questions, with topics ranging from facilities for young people - both Coun Law-Riding and Mr Straw claimed the credit for the borough’s free leisure drive - to controversial new laws on internet piracy.

In response to a question on the Iraq war, Mr Straw, who was foreign secretary at the time of the 2002 invasion, accepted he bore 'a heavy responsibility' and was 'deeply sorry' for people who had died.

But he added: “I would be accused of all sorts of things if I was seen to be ducking and diving now.”

He also accused Israel of 'preposterous' theft of land in the Palestine dispute.

His opponents attacked him over the Iraq invasion, with Coun Law-Riding claiming it proved former Prime Minister Tony Blair could not be trusted and Mr English calling for troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan.

Other topics included mental health care, with all of the panelists calling for a greater understanding of the issue, and the need to restore the link between the state pension and average earnings, abolished by Margaret Thatcher in 1980, which all parties have pledged to do.

At the end Anjum Anwar, the Cathedral cohesion worker who helped organise the debate, apologised to the audience for the disruption caused by Ms Irfan’s supporters.

She said: “I apologise for the unruly behaviour by my Muslim sister.

"She forgot this was a house of God, and she wouldn’t have raised her voice in a mosque.”

Lancashire Police said uniformed officers were called to the Cathedral at 1.15pm and several protesters, along with two vehicles, were 'moved on'.

One of the vehicles, both of which were towing campaign displays, was an ice cream van.

Nobody was arrested.

A spokesman for Ms Irfan said: "We were invited, then we were told to sit in the audience.

"That is outrageous."

Who has the audacity to decide who can be heard in the general election? Is this how it is going to be in future? you can only speak if you belong to one of the three main parties?
The independant candidate had every right to share the platform otherwise the debate is compromised. Jack straw has done his best to price ordinary people out of standing at an election. dont let the labour dictatorship get away with this.
I can assure you if the same were to happen in Hyndburn all hell would break loose, people have every right to hear what you stand for and if they dont like it or you they will vote accordingly. this is turning out to be the phoniest election in history. in the article it makes no mention of the referendem we were promised on the lisbon treaty. there are many issues that i dont believe were discused, which were of importance to the people of blackburn. This is an outrgeous attack on democracy by the three main parties. if they had any sense of democracy they would have insisted that all the candidates were given an equal opportunity. but what do you expect from jacks suporters?

I agree with the above. ALL parties should have been invited to the debate equally, that is what democracy is about. In this pre-election period all PPC's Potential Parliamentary Candidates are equal, and I include the BNP and English Democrats in that remark. Let everybody have their say and judge them from there. If you do not like what they have to say then don't vote for them, but do not deny them a voice.

Do you suggest that everybody goes around shouting the odds if they don't get what they want?

On reflection Chris perhaps...

every premier league side should have an equal number of games shown on TV?
every child from reception to year 6 have a say in how their school is run?
we should have a hung parliament giving each member a say on policy?

Do you see where i'm going? There are majority stakeholders in all walks of life and sadly the majority get a majority say. This is how life works. Take the school analogy. There are the children, around 200; then the support team, around 15; then the teachers, 7; the senior leadership team, 4 and finally head and deputy, 1 of each. I'm on the 3rd rung of the ladder in this pyramid and although i have ideas i don't demand to be at the management meetings claiming that it would be against my rights not to be there!
I admire what you are setting out to achieve but until you lead one of the 'big guns' you will have to give up your place on the podium. This doesn't stop you having your voice heard in other areas. You just have to work that little bit harder.
Rant over!

Well I think I can well and truly erase one name from my ballot paper. There's no way I'm putting a cross next to the box of someone who goes around shrieking with such a lack of respect, especially in a building that is sacred to many like the Cathedral. There are right and wrong ways of going about airing your grievances, and this way was certainly not right Bushra Irfan.

I think that the cathedral is no place to hold political debates of any kind. Blackburn cathedral has become more politicised since the appointment of Anjum Anwar....not by accident I suspect. Either use the Cathedral for the purpose it was built, or close it down, and no doubt please a great many people in this borough!

It is considered extremely disrespectful to raise your voice in anger at a place of worship.
.
I can't believe that many people are still considering voting Labour. Jack Straw has taken responsibility of causing the deaths of hundreds of British soldiers and the invasion of two countries in illegal wars. His foreign policies have put Great Britain under a constant risk of terrorist threat. Does taking responsibilty make what he has done right?
.
Tories - not much better. They wanted to go to war even more than Labour! There policies will help the rich get richer and the poor poorer. No good to the people of Blackburn. Or anywhere else for that matter
.
Lib Dems - Can't see them doing any worse than the other two. The only mainstream party that would actually mean a change. Doesn't spread hate.
.
Just my opinion.

One thing is very clear!
If ‘The Tony Blair Party’ get in again all we can expect is more bad management. More Janet Anderson expense claims. More Jack Straw ‘not fit for purpose’ law and order control. More Gordon Brown electioneering white teeth. More Mandelson string pulling. More deceit about wars abroad. More uncontrolled government spending. The list goes on.
-
‘ANYONE’ is better than ‘The Tony Blair Party’ that we now have with the unelected one in charge!

The same thing is happening to me in The Rossendale Hustings held by the Church, Not invited to debate on issues in R&D .
I am standing for the English Democrats and Darwen was in the National Press as being the most patriotic town for st Georges day.
And i am still not invited.
This is not Democracy this is nothing more than the Church supporting a diversive three party political directive
which is aimed at giving the public no other options other than voting for the big three.
How can you decide when you dont get any other information.
Democracy What Democracy.
The Lancashire Telegraph over the past 4 years have fallen over themselves to make stories about me, yet now its the general election you have heard nothing about me.
They did not even put out my press realease.
What can i say.
VOTE FOR 1, 2 or THREE.
ITS YOUR CHOICE, ITS YOUR ONLY CHOICE.
Oliver Cromwell killed a king for democracy and the people.
What was the point!

Any truth in the rumours (confirmed by a good mate of mine who's a Blackburn Labour Party activist) that the BNP have written off Blackburn and are concentrating their efforts on Burnley which is seen as more promising territory. Hes also heard some local businessmen in the Burnley/ Ribble Valley area are secretly providing financial backing for the BNP in Burnley

The Atheists have been dis-cluded from participating for thousands of years. They are the only group left that hasn't betrayed us. Religion has betrayed us and Politicians have betrayed us by pandering to their own puffed-up remedies and dogmas. The People are being deceived, betrayed and undermined by the blindness of religious and political arrogance and leaderships and their dark collusions.

" We have Betrayed you " are the winning words of religion as well as politics, at any election time.

Ken Shuffles says...
1:09pm Wed 21 Apr 10

If Nick Clegg is an Atheist I reckon he can tolerate political and religious dogma without supporting it and still come out in front.

He also doesn't give me the impression he is exactly chasing after the Atheist Voter! which I admit, is a bit of an odd strategy for a Politician.

Ken Shuffles says...
1:20pm Wed 21 Apr 10

Nick Clegg CAN come out and apologise on behalf of all his Political and religious opponents. He can say, on their behalf, with his Humility, what they have so far not had the Courage to say us, ...... " We Have Betrayed You ....."

As I understand it this was a "Private Meeting" not a Hustings and therefore teh Cathedral could invite whomever it pleassed. I agree inviting all candidates would be more helpful if it were a hustings but this is not necessary for a private meeting where one may invite whomsoever one lipkes and allow peole to attend.
I can understnad teh irritation but anyone may invie anyone else to a meeting wit no need to open the invitation to others to speak. Also at such a private meeting teh organisers may impose any rules they wish, had this been an open political meeting thing might be different! But all you responders seem to have missed the point this was NOT a hustings it was simply considering if we can trust any politicians.

Councillor Michael Johnson says...
1:40pm Wed 21 Apr 10

OK POINT TAKEN AND YOU ARE RIGHT.

Now can you explain this reply from the church to me re the Hustings events taking place in Rossendale and Darwen.

Dear Michael
I am replying to your e mail sent to Rev David Burrow regarding the 'hustings' meetings to be held at two of our Methodist churches.
At a joint meeting of the Rossendale Anglican, Methodist and Baptist clergy it was agreed that we would set up a hustings meeting which would be run along the same lines as the TV debates. Therefore only the three main parties were invited. I am part of a sub group who agreed to arrange the practicalities of the meeting and Methodist churches were selected because of their central location.
I understand your disappointment that your party was not included and I will make sure your views are passed on at the next joint clergy meeting.

Best wishes

So as you cans see, UNDEMOCRATIC AND QUITE DISGUSTING THAT THE CHURCH IS NOW BEING LED BY TELEVISION!!

I have to admit this article filled me with horror, when we're constantly being told that politics needs cleaning up. From the first TV debate it seems nothing will change. Bushra Irfan an independent candidate invited but not allowed to debate, and I've just been told that another independent candidate Janis Sharp was not even invited, someone that I particularly want to hear as she is supporting human rights.
The Lib Dems have already shown that the old mould of Labour versus Conservatives can be broken and I feel very strongly that we're now being denied to hear all points of view. If we end up with a government that continues to ignore us and human rights then we will just have to live with it. My main interests in this election are Afghanistan and Human Rights, and so far neither are being addressed and neither feature in either the Conservative, Labour or Lib Dem manifestos. Now I will never know what these candidates stand for.....

Ken Shuffles says...
3:17pm Wed 21 Apr 10

I'm not sure of how many meetings may be required to consider whether or not we trust the political collective en masse nor have I any idea what all these meetings are costing ? Most of the People I speak to have already reached a decision on it and it didn't cost them anything.

If we can put our Trust in the squabblings and babblings of Politicans and the Religious we can certainly put Trust in our own Souls.

Ken Shuffles says...
3:33pm Wed 21 Apr 10

Brian Todd, how come we are having private meetings in Churches about Public Politics ? Is it because it's the last place in the world an Atheist would expect to be invited ?

Ken Shuffles says...
3:41pm Wed 21 Apr 10

What have Religious charities and Politicians dogmas ever done to support the interests and worthy causes of non-believing, Atheist Communities ?

Ken Shuffles says...
3:54pm Wed 21 Apr 10

Politics isn't about what the Political and the Religious stand and live for. It is more about what will these Institutions NOT bend and kill for.

Given the meeting was local I dont see any problem inviting all the candidates.
Its not a leaders debate on national T.V
The inter faith forum in Hyndburn has invited all candidates to a question and answer session next week.
The minor parties are being heard and the main parties are becoming worried. The election is not going to plan.

I must say well said to commentators Faithless and Woodyads for the comments above. How that slime ball Jack- Non Justice Secretary- Straw, has the gall to even think of standing again. He is supposed to be...that's SUPPOSED TO BE the Justice Secretary, and yet, every day, yes, sadly , every day there are reports about visitors to our wonderful country, committing crimes of the most serious nature, and all the time, the people are calling for proper justice. And yet still, the murderer of Amy Houston is still in the UK, enjoying British housing, health, employment and education for his kids. What do the voters of the UK have to do, to get some proper and correct justice for the crimes, where the crims get only a slap on the wrist, and a lifetime of benefits? Voters of the Blackburn constituency, think hard where you put your mark on 6th May. You have the chance to vote someone in, who will actually live up to his job description.
