Fans mourn Darwen dad who died at Blackburn Rovers game

The devastated family of a Blackburn Rovers fan who was fatally injured at Saturday’s game at Stoke have paid tribute to “a local legend”.

John Steven Taylor died of head injuries in hospital in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It is believed he was hit on the head by a bin in the concourse of Stoke’s Britannia Stadium just after half time during Saturday’s clash.

Yesterday his family spoke of their shock at the loss of the 30-year-old, of Avallon Way, Darwen, who leaves an eight year son.

Mother Susan Taylor, 51, who lives in Lisbon Drive, close to her son’s house, said: “The police said it was a group of them having a laugh, and a bin started flying around, and the next time it came over it hit John on the back of the head.

“He just went to watch his team play football, and now I can’t bring him home.

“He only lived around the corner, so he could just pop home for tea.

"He always had a cheeky grin. He was always smiling, all his life and was the life and soul of any party.”

Mr Taylor, who worked as a bricklayer, was the oldest of four brothers and a Blackburn Rovers season ticket holder.

In October he was due to be joint best man at the wedding of younger brother Mark, who had travelled down on the coach from the Craven Heifer pub with him ahead of Saturday’s match.

Mark, 24, of Somerset Avenue, Darwen, said: “We were organising the stag do on the way down. Now it won’t be the same.

“He was a massive Rovers fan, and everyone knows him in Darwen.

"I was always referred to as ‘John’s brother’ everywhere I went. He’s always been a legend.

“All the brothers went to Feyenoord in a big group in 2006 for the UEFA cup match, it was the best away day we have ever had.

“But the game he was really looking forward to the Burnley match. He had been talking about that non-stop.”

Mark said eight-year-old Jacob “idolised” his dad, who took him to Ewood Park in the Darwen End.

Over the weekend tributes to the former Darwen Moorland student poured in from fans of clubs across the country, and a Facebook group in his memory quickly generated more than 1,000 members.

Scarves and a programme for the Stoke match were left at the Sir Jack Walker statue outside Ewood Park, with the message “football’s number one fan.”

And a statement released by Blackburn Rovers said the club was shocked and saddened to learn of the fan’s death.

Chairman John Williams said: “This is a tragic situation and our thoughts are with John’s family at this deeply distressing time.”

Mark added: “The tributes have been incredible - from every club you can think of. Even Burnley fans have put down the rivalry.”

The two brothers had been sitting in different sections of the 1,300-strong away support during the match, and the family said they were still unaware of exactly what had happened.

Staffordshire Police are still investigating and are studying mobile phone and CCTV footage from the incident.

Mr Taylor was treated at the scene for a head injury and cardiac arrest, then rushed to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire but police confirmed he died at 1.55am yesterday.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: “A Home Office post-mortem was carried out earlier today and the cause of death was due to a head injury.”

A 25-year-old man from Preston, who the family said they did not know, has been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident.

Staffordshire Police said the 25-year-old, from Preston, had been “bailed pending further inquiries”.

I am have to say that the Stoke Stewards and Police were brilliant today, they did not get heavy handed and were very patient with the few nutters who baited them.

An old guy near me was pushed to the floor by a nutter who tried to jump out of his row just as the 2nd goal went in before half time, and the stewards were straight to him , and took him off for medical care. He was back later so I guess he was OK.

I hope and pray that this guy is OK, but by the way his Girl was sobbing as we left ( after the 3rd goal) I think it was looking grim for him.

Nobody deserves this at a football match

I for one was at the game today, during half time there became a saparation of blackburn fans between darwen and blackburn. numerous items were thrown and kicked such as plastic bottles. the fans where roudy and hyped throughout half time, until some idiot, decides it would be funny to thrown a large heavy thick plastic bin, the bin was thrown into the crowd of blackburn fans and hit a male on the head knocking him out and hitting his head for a second time on the floor. as for the steards and police response, i have to say it was shocking! took at least five minutes for police to show up! i hope the injured fan pulls through and my thoughts are with him and his family.

rinse these half wits from rovers away support. im not convinced of "gang warfare", just numpties getting off on anti allardyce rhetoric.
hardcore rovers supporters need to rinse this cancerous element, including the racist halfwits who used to chant the owen coyle rubbish.
banish these society dropouts to the north sea and let real rovers supporters have a moan at their team in a dignified manner. maybe an old school meet far away from inside a football stadium with opposition thugs would kick some sense into the perpertrators of this shocking act of cowardliness.

i hate violence in every respect. i dont go to games at the moment because of a disabilty inflicted last year.
.
however, i gave up supporting rovers away a couple of years ago, because the atmosphere among some away fans had become poisonous and it had ceased to be "fun" going away.
.
i cannot tell you how much it hurts to not bother about following rovers away from home - - but it pales into insignificance how the family and friends of this lad must be feeling now. its a game of football for christ's sake!
.
if it is true that this lad's life was a result of a battle between rival rovers fans, then it is truly time to give up the game forever.
.
my immediate response to hearing this story was "stoke bastar*s!", but to discover it was it was about tow groups of rovers fans in the concourse at half-time is unblelievable.
.
please rip to the lad.
.
finding it hard to continue to bother supporting rovers, this incident, i fear will push me over the edge....what is worth this?

"I can't believe what I've just read,
What must be going through your girlfriend's head.
Though we can't stop the hands of time.
We give to you this little rhyme
We will do our best to say goodbye
Some in the crowd will no doubt cry
We'll think of you when the whistle blows
The flowers wrapped in pretty bows
And whilst we'll never have you back,
You'll be safe in the arm of our old mate Jack."

Such a shame that things have to come to this. R.I.P.

I've been a Rovers season ticket holder for 12 years, & regularly go to away games.
In the last couple 2-3 years I feel that there's been a marked change, with a minority of Rovers "fans" turning up blind drunk, swearing, being racist, & looking to kick off.
I've been involved in a couple of "arguments" myself at away games with such vermin, as I won't put up with being subjected to this nonsense for the entire game.
I can see the only solution being a heavier & more aggressive police/steward presence to fish out these hyped up scumbags who struggle to handle a couple of pre-match pints before kicking off. They are a real disgrace to our great club.

I experienced the vile atmosphere recently at the Wigan away game in the concourse before & at half time, maybe 40-50 youngish Rovers fans spouting all types of hatred. At the time I thought it could have tipped over into violence, luckily it didn’t. Very surprised to hear that there’s now various factions in the Rovers support -There’s always been a type of rivalry between Darwen & Blackburn people but nothing violent in my experiences. I wouldn’t have been surprised if the Anti Sam/Pro Sam brigades had a influence, like someone hinted at earlier in the thread. Stoke had just scored their second goal just before half time so I imagine the feelings in the Rovers fans were heightened to boiling point -In no way am I vindicating the violence that happened, just trying to understand what accrued. Sad day for Rovers & it’s fans.

I hope that all the facts come out in due course and, if appropriate, any culprit is severely punished.

.

It may be that there is a problem which the Club and its supporters need to address. Drunkeness is no excuse for unacceptable behaviour.

.

Perhaps decent Rovers fans need to become pro-active in indicating those who are out-of-order to stewards and police. Is public drunkeness not an offence in itself?

.

I believe that the Club itself needs to take a lead in resolving any problems of anti-social behaviour amongst fans. Perhaps we should have our own stewards at away games funded by the Club?

.

All-in-all I guess we should wait until the full facts of this incident are known but, from the comments above, it is clear that many decent fans feel uncomfortable at best around some of these drunken louts.

.

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the victim of this incident.

.

Football is great and we must ensure that we put our house in order very, very quickly.

I'm not taking away the responsibility of the person who's ended the Rovers fans life, but the question
'where were the Stewards and Police at the time of this incident' needs to be asked?

This is so so sad, we all enjoy a bit of banter but physical violence is unwelcome and the idiots responsible for this mindless act deserve all they get.
So called Rovers fans too they have just brought shame on the club, its supporters and more importantly destroyed a family
I don’t go to many away games these days but still get a few and usually enjoy them more as the fans do tend to be a bit more vocal. My last away game was Notts Forrest and I do have say I did notice that there did seem to be a few more idiots who baited the stewards. I just put this down to me getting old (now mid 30s) but maybe my instincts were right.

the poster `sammi` above is clearly of this `jackass`influenced generation in thinking the behaviour that went on at stoke was `just a laugh`. i`ve said it before and i`ll say it again, too much anti-social behaviour these days is constantly disgracefully referred to in such a way.

The fact the it was done by a so called 'one of your own' beggers belief - why oh why are they fighting amongst themselves - you were all there to support 'your' team your supposed to be like one big 'family' no matter which town you come from - what is wrong with people these days??

RIP John Taylor - God bless you and your family may they find the strength to get through this - you were in the wrong place at the wrong time when some idiot decided to become 'hard' and throw a bin into a crowd (big man - NOT!) - hopefully he will get what is coming to him and others may sit up and think about their next match and their actions. You were supposed to be all on the same side! You were they to support the ones you loved...

God Bless you and your family - we may be 'enemies' on the pitch but I am repulsed and so sorry about what has happened - no-one deserves to die over a bloody game, and yes, at the end of the day that is all it is a bloody game!!

i don`t know the facts at all, but reading from various posters that claim to have witnessed what happened, the bin possibly had been throw in the air between fans rather that at them and the guy may have actually ran and it and headed it in mid air..

it`s still however the type of behaviour that has gone on too long at rovers away games now, something bad was always going to come about as a result at some point.

Known John since I can remember. One of my best mates brothers and his Idol. 2 big memories I have of J.T. are the water fights we used to have as kids when he once emptied a bucket of water over my head and i was convinced I was drowning which I now realise says more about my "wetness" than anything to do with him.

The other was when I was 14 and I got drunk for the first time ever at the Taylor house with John, sneeking White Lightening cider past Ste and Sue. He convinced me, probably without much persuasion, to eat fish food. Always up for a laugh, always welcoming and always willing to share. Even his fish's food.

Oh what hell his girlfriend and family will be going through. I saw the little one on TV saying they had the dog - BLESS! Hopefully in a few years times the pain will have got a little bit less.
If you were a witness then don't be a coward.

What an absolute tragedy. I am a Burnley fan, but to think that there is an eight year old lad who will never see his dad again because of a football match is heartbreaking.
.
Rivalries are put aside on occasions like this and I for one hope you raise the roof on Wednesday night in memory of John Taylor, and hope that the idiot who threw the bin gets what's coming to him.
.
RIP

RIP fellow rover,

i was at stoke on sat, and i was in the concourse at half time, i saw plastic bottles flying in the air also a bin been thrown in the air to each other to catch it, there was no fighting wot so ever, and to be honest john jumped up and headed the bin. ive got video footage ov this tragic ACCIDENT which i have informed the police, silliness that got out ov hand, police n stewards was no were to be seen until it was to late, this could have been prevented if authoritys had intervened sooner...

RIP JOHN TAYLOR

Another MORONIC post. Have some fecking respect. How can you blame the authorities for yours and others VERY immature actions? First off you say it was silliness that got out of hand and then blame the authorites - get real!
I don't know the REAL facts of the incident BUT I can tell you now that throwing a bin is not an accident and if that results in the death it is certainly not an accident and the public would (I hope) 99.9% expect a criminal charge and conviction of manslaughter at the very least.
R.I.P. (I can still see his son on TV re still got the dog - bless him)

So what exactly did the guy hope to achieve by throwing a bin in a crowded concourse?
How pathetic that you seem to be advocating that everyone elses safety is the responsibility of the stewards and police alone.
Whatever happened, all those involved should hang their heads in shame. They've collectively let down Blackburn Rovers Football Club, John Taylor's family and the wider football community by their own puerile actions.
