East Lancashire atheists miss bus as 'No God' advert turned down

DISPUTED: Adverts like this will not be seen on local buses DISPUTED: Adverts like this will not be seen on local buses

NON-believers have tried to place controversial adverts on East Lancashire buses questioning the existence of God.

Campaigners from the Lancashire Secular Humanists (LSH) group had approached Lancashire United, the firm behind Spot On buses in Blackburn and Transdev routes in Burnley, asking to place a series of banners on single and double deckers.

The adverts would have read: “There’s Probably No God. Now Stop Worrying and Enjoy Your Life.”

But the humanists were told that the company does not allow any advertising on its routes and declined the request.

Church and civic leaders across the county are divided on the merits of the adverts, designed to promote the group’s first ever meeting at Blackburn’s central library later this month.

LSH chairman Ian Abbott said: “I suppose you could say we’ve missed the bus. But we are going ahead with our May 20 meeting in Blackburn anyway.

“We think many more people in Blackburn and Burnley would be interested to learn about who we are.

“We just want to make contact with people in other parts of Lancashire ––– people who are already humanists, or think they may be, or are just curious about what humanism is.”

Similar adverts provoked controversy when another humanist group attempted to place them on London buses.

The reaction from all sides of the religious divide in East Lancashire has been mixed though.

Canon Chris Chivers, who is responsible for interfaith relations at Blackburn Cathedral, said he would welcome the chance to ‘begin a dialogue’ with the humanists group.

He added: “I would think that the Dean and I would be happy to engage in a debate about religion in our society and hopefully we can come to some sort of respectful accommodation.”

“There are people who do believe in God there are people who do not, and it is central to their lives also.”

Salim Mulla, vice-chairman of Lancashire Council of Mosques, said: “A message like this will not be helpful to the work going on between the Christian and Muslim communities in East Lancashire.”

A spokesman for Lancashired United said: “We do not allow any form of external advertising on our services.”

What a breath of fresh air, just what Lancashire needs. I think I will turn up to this little meeting, Humanism is great, even better if its secular.

On the subject of Lancashire United's advertless buses I think it is a great shame. Adverts can often add colour and even add to the sense of local identity when local businesses and the like use them to advertise.

they're entitled to their opinion but why stir trouble for the sake of it? it seems a pretty pointless excercise.there's plenty of room on the internet

To those for whom God is a reality it`s pointless. For those who believe this, they are entitled to their views. For those who are desperate or suicidal it won`t give them hope. Give the money to Samaritans to help someone instead

Would there be a story about this if it were a religious group wanting to put an advert on a bus promoting their beliefs?

I think not.

lkw - Humanism is inherently secular!

These guys sound just as "evangelical" about their non-belief as some Christians, Muslims and others are about their faith!

What a waste of money. Go and help some of your fellow human beings instead - that's true humanism.

Putting an end to the hypocrisy of Religion is helping mankind.

Even the God of Religion is an Atheist.

The main concern for every human being is to Enjoy Life. To be filled with Gratitude for the opportunity of being Alive and not to be undermined by vague and ridiculous notions of what a God wants us to do to win a reward in the next.

The only problem with the slogan is that it includes the word probably.

God is an Atheist would be a much more accurate slogan.

Salim Mulla as well as Chris Chivers need to understand that there are other communities besides the Christian and Muslim ones.

It is called the Community of Human Beings.

The advert is right though, there probably isn't a god - there isn't enough evidence one way or the other; so as it says, get over it.

Those that choose to beleive in a monotheistic supreme being who is, you have to admit, quite hands-off in his approach, is their choice.

Me, I prefer to beleive that actually we just get born, we live and then we die - just like every other living organism on the planet.
