Blackburn with Darwen deputy and leader in rail plans row

BLACKBURN with Darwen Council’s leader and his deputy have clashed over claims a Conservative Party election victory would hit improvements to the borough’s rail network.

Deputy leader of the coalition council, Darwen Lib Dem councillor David Foster believes a Tory Government would slash the money planned to go in to improving the rail network and would not start any work until 2015.

But council leader Mike Lee, a Conservative who leads the coalition which runs the council, hit back and accused his deputy of trying to capitalise on people’s fears.

In January Gordon Brown signed a £400million Multi Area Agreement which placed East Lancashire’s rail links with Manchester at the top of the governm-ent’s priorities for the area.

Coun Lee said: “I am disappointed that Coun Foster has said these things.

“It seems that he is making guesses and picking on things that people might be frightened of.

“Usually with things that are signed through like this, they go through regardless of who is in power.”

Isn't this yet another, classic example of the "YAH BOO" mentality which has bedevilled British politics for far too long? - nothing but constant, childish attempts at point-scoring?

If these two morons has any real savvy, they'd be throwing their collective weight fully behind the agreement, and declaring their wholehearted support. Not only that, they would be constantly chivvying and lobbying to see that those apparently behind it, the PM and others, stick to the letter of what they have signed up to.

Consensus politics - dream on!

I don't know about cancelling the rail plan, but I hope the bus lane plan will be cancelled WHEN the Tory government takes over, the sooner the better.

Why would a Tory Govt cancel the bus lane plans when all the local Tory councillors voted for it ??

The liberal leader yet again falling out with the coalition just as another vote is comeing up.
First he fell out with For Darwen after they won the elections in Darwen.
He forced through the area boards no one wanted.
He went against the wishes of the people of Darwen over the Town councill, and now he is falling out with the Conservatives over a decision made in Westminster which by the way there is absolutly nothing we as a council can do anything about.

So the question is what happens if he gats hammered in the town council elections.
I wait with baited breath.

Do coalitions actually work in any country, Israel is a prime example of failure after failure of such coalitions and it certainly does not seem to work here with constant bickering amongst the allied parties
The set up of Area boards,a local Town council WHY, what power base do they have and at what cost to the electorate.
It would seem that the people of Darwen need a policy change in the direction of their elected members or failing that then a change in the make up of the elected members themselves.
