THE family of a teenager left fighting for life after a brutal street attack have urged the local community to shop the ‘scum’ who attacked him.

Fifteen-year-old Gino Hargreaves has been in a coma for six days.

His devastated family made the emotional appeal as police called on residents to ‘do the decent thing’ and come forward with information.

Gino was attacked by two men as he made his way home from a youth disco in Blackburn.

In the motiveless assault last Thursday, they viciously kicked Gino in the head as he lay on grassy land off Hancock Street, Bank Top, He last night remained in a coma at Hope Hospital, Salford,.

Gino's family extended their plea at a press conference for the community to come forward to shop those responsible for the brutal attack. His uncle Paul Newton said: "There is no difference between a bullet and a foot in my eyes.

"These people need catching. There must be a clue that will lead us to them.

"We would appeal to those responsible to give themselves up to the police.

"The longer this goes on the more callous and irresponsible you are.

“You know who you are and what you have done."

He added: "Gino is a fabulous lad. He is a bit of a wanderer at times - very independent.

"He has a lot of friends in Blackburn.

"He still saves his pocket money up every year to buy his family christmas presents.

"How many young people do that these days?

"We are distraught. Everyday it's up or down for us, depending on the trinkets of information we get from the hospital.

"We are all hoping we don't lose him. We love him very much.

"How can anyone take that love away?"

Gino's grandmother Diana Campbell added: "Gino has a smile for everyone and a caring attitude regardless of age or race.

"This was a cowardly attack. It brings a great shame on our community.

“We have to stop this happening to another family."

His aunt and uncle, Andrena and Paul Newton, made the appeal for anyone with information about their nephew's attackers to get in touch with police.

Andrena said: “The family have been left devastated by what has happened to Gino.

"We are spending time at his bedside hoping and praying that he will pull through for us."

Paul added: "We would urge anyone who has any information to report it to the police. Please help catch the people responsible for this despicable attack.”

Posting messages to the Lancashire Telegraph website, other members of Gino's family have also urged people to come forward.

His aunt Michaela wrote: "As my nephew Gino waits outside Heaven’s door I pray 'God don't let him in it' s not time. It’s not fair’.

"An innocent young man does not deserve the senseless beating he was given.

"I hope that justice is served and those responsible are not given the freedom to repeat their crime and put other families through this hell."

Another aunt, posting on the website, said: "The whole family are praying every day that there is some good news.

"I wish I could take the morons that did this to the hospital and make them take a good look and ask them if they feel good about what they have done to my nephew.

"And then let my family deal with them.

“'You will be caught you scum': that is my message to them."

Gino, of Sandon Street, had been at a teenage disco at Liquid and Envy nightclub in Blackburn town centre in the hours before the assault, and left at around 8pm.

Police believe he had made his way to King Street, near to the Lidl store, at about 10.15pm but are keen to learn more about his movements.

He was attacked around 15 minutes later in Hancock Street.

His attackers were described as two men ‘of Asian appearance’ in their late teens or early 20s, both wearing dark jackets. They made off up Hancock Street.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Gray, from the force major investigation team, said: “This is understandably a very difficult time for the family who are maintaining a bedside vigil with Gino.

"Due to the location of the attack and the overall circumstances, it’s highly likely that the offenders either live in the area or were visiting people in that area and would be known by members of the community.

“I would further echo the family’s appeal for people to come forward with information that will help us catch the people responsible for this appalling attack.

“I have a team of officers who are exhausting a number of lines of enquiry but I remain convinced that people in Blackburn know something and they must do the decent thing and come forward.

"This was an appalling attack on a young man who sustained life-threatening injuries for what are as yet unknown reasons."

Anyone with information that will help the inquiry is asked to contact DCI Gray on 01254 51212 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
