A TRUCK driver is wanted by police after an eight-year-old boy was rushed to hospital following a 'serious' crash on the M65.

Police have launched an appeal following a collision involving a Mercedes C220 and a HGV flat-bed truck just after junction 4 at Darwen.

The crash, which occurred on Thursday at around 8pm, caused the Mercedes to hit the central reservation and ricochet back into the path of the truck.

The front passenger, an eight-year-old boy, from Aughton, was rushed to Manchester Children’s Hospital with a head and leg injury.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 39-year-old man who was also from Aughton, was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The HGV driver ran off from the scene of the crash.

The truck is believed to have been stolen in Sheffield.

Officers have asked witnesses with information to come forward.

Sgt Finn Quainton said: “My thoughts are with the boy who I wish a full and speedy recovery in hospital.

“We are actively trying to track down the man that was seen running from the truck. Not only do we need to speak to him, he may also have been injured and could require medical assistance.

"If you you have any information about him or indeed the incident itself, please make contact with us.”

Anyone who has seen anything should contact the police on 101 quoting incident reference LC-20170517-1422.
