A PILE of rubbish in a supermarket car park has been removed after months of complaints.

Neighbours living near Tesco Express in Livesey Branch Road, Blackburn, became angry after a mound of rubbish from the car park behind their properties started piling up in a hollow.

After becoming frustrated with the lack of action to remove it, one neighbour moved it onto the side of the car park in full view on Tuesday morning.

And the litter, which included plastic food containers, food, cans, half bottles of alcohol and old cushions, was removed yesterday morning (Wednesday) by staff from Tesco.

Pauline Walton, who lives on Beechwood Drive which backs onto the car park, said the rubbish had been coming from shoppers in the supermarket.

She called for bins and signs to be installed in the car park and for fines to be handed out.

She said: “This problem was reported to the council some time ago, but they did nothing.

“I’ve spoken to my next door neighbour who said the rubbish was bringing rats into their garden.

“Out of frustration, one resident raked the litter out of hollow onto the side of the car park in full view, and it’s worked as it was removed by Tesco workers on Wednesday morning.”

A Tesco spokesman said it acted 'immediately' to clear the rubbish from its outdoor area and will be 'monitoring the situation closely for signs of pests'.

The spokesman added: "We are committed to ensuring our stores and car parks meet the highest standards of cleanliness and we take all reports of pests extremely seriously. "

A Blackburn with Darwen Council spokesman said: “This is private land and therefore the responsibility of the land owner.

"We are pleased this matter has been resolved.”
