A MAN who didn’t want to spend the night out in the cold threw a brick at a police car to make sure he got locked up.

Blackburn magistrates heard Mark Weller ended up getting two nights as a guest of Lancashire Constabulary.

But his full board cost him £185 when he appeared in court.

Weller, 28, of Vincent Close, Chertsey, Surrey, pleaded guilty to criminal damage to a police car wing mirror. He was given a conditional discharge for six months and ordered to pay £100 compensation and £85 costs.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said Weller had been released from Greenbank police station under “no further action” and officers were giving him a lift. He picked up a brick and threw it at a nearby police car. It bounced of the window and Weller picked it up and threw it again.

When he was interviewed, Weller said he did it because he didn’t want to stay outside in the cold.

Gareth Price, defending, said after his release the police were prepared to give Weller a lift to a local address.

“He saw his actions as a way of guaranteeing him a bed for the night,” said Mr Price.
