A MAN was attacked with a hammer during an attempted robbery in Blackburn.

Detectives have launched a manhunt following the ‘violent and nasty assault’ which happened in Lynthorpe Road this morning.

Police said the 32-year-old victim was walking to work between 5.20am and 5.40am when he was approached from behind by two men.

The men punched the victim, knocking him to the ground, before hitting him in the leg with a hammer. They then continued to assault the victim.

Both attackers searched the 32-year-old man’s pockets before leaving the scene empty-handed.

The victim was later taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where he received treatment for a number of injuries. His condition is not life-threatening.

No arrests have been made and police patrols have been stepped up in the area.

Det Con Sian Hindle, of Blackburn CID, said: “This was a violent and nasty assault which has left the victim with a number of injuries.

“We are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

“If you saw or heard anything unusual in the area around the time of the offence, contact police immediately.”

The attackers are described as being of slim build, dressed in dark-coloured clothing with their hoods up and faces covered.
