POLICE are to press for action to curb speeders after monitoring a busy road.

Officers who checked speeds for an hour on Knowsley Road in Wilpshire say a third of the 126 cars seen were exceeding 25mph in a 20mph zone. One was doing 45mph.

The community roadwatch took place in response to lots of requests from people who live in the area.

A request for more traffic-calming measures will now go to the county council's highways department.

A police spokesman said: "Our community roadwatch scheme is aimed at advising rather than enforcing, and fines aren't very often given as a result of a community roadwatch.

"However, in instances where our staff see fit - e.g over double the speed limit - tickets may be issued.

"Lancashire County Council will be contacted with a view to implementing more traffic-calming measures, which are obviously needed."
