ANOTHER new restaurant is set to open in Blackburn centre at the end of next month, creating 20 jobs.

Gioia Italiano will be based on Church Street in the former Blackburn Rovers store, previously the town's Visitor Information Centre.

The announcement last night of the 70-diner restaurant and wine bar, with conservatory and garden dining area, come just days before the new 100-cover A Mano Italian opens under the Cathedral Square office block.

The two new Mediterranean eateries join Turtle Bay, Cafe Northcote, the Premier Inn’s Thyme Restaurant and Nando's in Blackburn's central area.

News of the planned restaurant under the Lancashire Telegraph's new offices and opposite Blackburn Market, has been welcomed by the borough's regeneration boss Phil Riley and council Tory group leader John Slater.

Mike Hajewskyj, owner and partner in the project, said: “We are thrilled to be bringing Gioia to Blackburn this year.

"I am Blackburn born and bred and we can see that Blackburn is at a very exciting stage in its rejuvenation.

"We hope to bring around 20 new jobs to the town too.

"We love the amount of space the new venue will offer including its conservatory and garden that backs onto the Cathedral grounds."

Gioia Italiano will include a wine bar, and a 'quick service' deli counter will offering take-away meals including piadina using cured meats and cheese with fresh salads and pastas.

Cllr Riley said: "It's great news to see another addition to Blackburn town centre increasing restaurant life. I wish it well."

Cllr Slater said: "This is very welcome. It looks like a further sign that Blackburn town is becoming a real destination for eating and dining."

Mr Hajewskyj said: “We hope that Gioia, with it's relaxed atmosphere, will attract people who want to meet for a quick drink, need a speedy lunch in the restaurant or want to grab a lunchtime bite from the deli counter, as well as a great evening venue for romantic meals, get-togethers and celebrations.

“Our authentic Italian cuisine will also draw on lots of local produce. Much of our fish and meat will be from Blackburn Market."

Gioia, also plans to serve cocktails and local craft beers.

The £250,000 A Mano Italian restaurant opens on Monday creating 30 jobs on the ground floor of the One Cathedral Square office block at the heart of the town centre's £34million Cathedral Quarter.
