DOG lovers helped an animal centre fetch in charity funds with a novelty animal show.

Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) in Briercliffe welcomed dogs of all breeds and abilities for the event.

Dogs competed across eight classes, including best condition, junior handler, fancy dress and waggiest tail to achieve, victory.

The top two from each category then competed in the overall championship at the end of the show.

All money raised from the event went to the animal charity, which was hosting the novelty dog show at Shores Hey Farm for the first time.

Bethany Wolstencroft, 15, from Darwen, competed with her dog Sapphire across several categories at the event.

She said: "I saw it on the website and thought it would be a great idea to come along.

"It's just good fun, I really really like it.

"I've done two or three competitions before and I've been along to HAPPA before, it's a really good cause."

Around 70 people signed up to take part in the event which included prizes such as doggy products hamper.

Carla Butterworth, from Burnley, came along with her beagle called Lucy to take part in the event and support the good cause.

The 23-year-old said: "It's great to see all the dogs come along and see them socialising.

"We're big fans of HAPPA and the work they do so it's great to see them host this sort of thing."

Carol McDonnell who attend with her whippet, said: "I love supporting good causes like this, it's an ideal event."

Julie Rickwood-Gan, development officer at HAPPA, said: "It's fun, that is the main thing about the event.

"Anyone has been able to come along and get involved.

"Whether people have spent £20 or £1,000, everyone is just welcome to come along and try their best.

"We have quite a lot of supporters at HAPPA and the main aim of the day is just to support the charity.
