GREEN campaigners in East Lancashire have backed a supermarket's decision to stop selling single-use plastic bags.

From the end of August, all of Tesco's 3,500 stores will replace the 5p bags with bags for life at 10p.

Avril Hesson, of Burnley and District Friends of the Earth, said: "I think it is a good idea and something that will spread to the other supermarkets."

A spokesperson for the East Lancashire Green Party said: "I welcome Tesco's initiative but I consider it to be a very small gesture towards addressing the big problem of plastic waste worldwide.

"Plastic waste in our streets and countryside is very unsightly."
