A WELL-known hostelry in Blackburn is set for a 'grand reopening' tonight - by public demand.

Regulars have picked up paint brushes and sanders in a bid to complete the refurbishment of the Blackamoor Inn.

New landlady Donna Almond, 46, said she has been 'overwhelmed' by the strength of community feeling as the Roman Road landmark prepares to throw open its doors again.

Residents had considered registering the Blackamoor, which had traded since the 1700s, as an 'asset of community value' before Donna, who used to run Uncle Jack's in Ewood, stepped in.

Donna said: "We've come in and given the place a new lease of life because it was in a fairly desperate state of repair when we first arrived.

"I used to live around here so I was one of those who wanted to see the pub reopened.

"The level of help we've had from the local community has been overwhelming.

"People have been coming in, after seeing what has been happening, and giving us a hand with the painting and sanding.

"Everyone around here wanted the Blackamoor back and we can't thank them enough."

Soul and Motown performer Andy Kay will take centre stage for the reopening party tonight but Donna also has extensive plans for the venture.

She has installed a gin bar on the premises and plans to offer cocktails, as well as completely overhauling the games room.

The first few weeks should see new recruits found for proposed new pool, darts and dominoes teams.

Quiz nights are planned for Thursdays, with a free jukebox on Fridays and karaoke or live acts on Saturdays.

Donna is also hoping to stage fun days on Sundays, for all the family, with bingo and children's games lined up.

An action group, backed by Blackburn MP Kate Hollern, was originally formed to fight the previous closure, which eventually happened last summer.
