THIEVES smashed through a wall as they tried to raid a cash machine at a Blackburn supermarket.

Police think the gang used tools to get into the Aldi store in Livesey Branch Road, at the retail park opposite Ewood Park.

They then tried to break into the back of the cash machine but were unsuccessful, police said.

Officers are now appealing for help from people who could have seen the incident. It happened between midnight on Monday and the early hours of Tuesday.

Det Sgt Mark Hutchinson said: “This appears to have been a targeted attack on the ATM and thankfully the culprits didn’t manage to get away with any money despite their rigorous attempts to do so.

“The supermarket faces a McDonald’s which will have been open until 3am and so we are hoping that someone will have seen something.

“I urge anyone who saw anything suspicious to get in contact with us as soon as possible.

“Similarly if anyone has any information at all that could help I ask them to get in touch with us by calling 101 quoting incident reference 158 of April 11th.”

Aldi was unavailable for comment.
