INTREPID mums and their families zipped through an experience they will never forget yesterday by during the first ever zip wire challenge at Ewood Park.

The charity behind the event, Blackburn Youth Zone, welcomed around 150 mums and their families who all paid £10 to travel at height and at speed over the hallowed Rovers turf.

The wire was installed from the back of the Blackburn End stand over the famous football pitch for a thrilling 150 metres to the Darwen End.

Amelia Hanson, who helped organise the Mother's Day event for Blackburn Youth Zone, said: “It couldn’t have gone better and the feedback was positive from everyone who took part.

“It was a real family atmosphere and we saw generations of families taking part.

“All 150 spaces were taken.

“Some people also raised sponsorship for other charities, such as one woman who said she’d been pledged £300 for East Lancashire Hospice.”

One surprised gran didn’t have a clue about her high altitude destination when she was told by her son that he was treating her to a Mothers’ Day breakfast.

Dawn Grierson, 54, of White Ash Lane, Oswaldtwistle, said: “My son Lee Greenwood picked me up and I thought it was a little strange when he asked me to wear trainers.

“It was a lovely surprise but I must admit I had my eyes closed. It was a Mothers’ Day with a difference but I really enjoyed it.” Lee and Dawn’s two grandchildren, Aiden, nine and Lucy, six, also did the zip challenge.
