MORE than £10,000 was raised at an event to honour the memory of a royal marine who was killed in Afghanistan, it has been announced.

Marine David Fairbrother, from Blackburn, was killed by a single gunshot wound in the head during a security patrol in Helmand Province in 2011.

The final total from the ball held at the Dunkenhalgh last month has now been calculated.

His sister Emily said the evening had raised more than £10,000.

The former Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School pupil, who was 24 when he died, had requested that any money raised in the event of his death should go to The Royal Marines Charity.
