A 31-YEAR-OLD driver ran off when he realised a police car had pulled up behind him.
Blackburn magistrates heard Matthew James McNamara ran off down a 25foot embankment onto the canal tow path.
He then scaled a wall but was eventually arrested inside the William Blythe compound, Blackburn magistrates heard.
McNamara, of Margaret Street, Oswaldtwistle, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.
He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with 100 hours unpaid work and 12 days rehabilitation activity requirement.
He was ordered to pay £85 costs and £85 victim surcharge and banned from driving for 25 months.
Richard Prew, defending, said McNamara had been employed as a driver and had lost his job as a result of the incident.
"He had foolishly driven a short distance to buy cigarettes and when his partner told him the police had pulled up behind he panicked," said Mr Prew.
